el río hasta el mercado Zegyo, exhibe orgullosa su
Palacio Real y sus pagodas de Kuthodaw, Kyauktawgyi,
Mahamuni y Eindawya. Pero, posiblemente, lo que más
atraiga la atención del viajero en esta ciudad sea el
Shwenandaw Kyaung, el exquisito monasterio, total-
mente de madera, en cuyo interior se podrá disfrutar
contemplando la celebración de las lecturas y ritos de
los monjes y fieles que allí se dan cita diariamente.
Amarapura
En las cercanías de Mandalay se encuentran las “ciuda-
des desiertas” de Sagaing, Mingun, Ava, Monywa y
Amarapura. Esta última fue la capital de la región antes
que Mandalay le arrebatase tal honor. De aquella época
conserva la pagoda Kyauktawgyi, a la que se llega tras
atravesar el entrañable puente de U Bein.
Sagaing
Sagaing se encuentra sobre una colina devorada por
sus incontables templos, tras los que se esconde la
hermosa pagoda Kaunghmudaw. De ésta, cualquier
guía local relatará al viajero la curiosa historia que
cuenta que el monumento fue erigido tomando
como modelo el perfecto busto de la reina de
Amarapura.
Mingun
La “ciudad desierta” de Mingun presenta a la curiosi-
dad del viajero las ruinas de la que, de haberse llegado
construir por completo, hubiese sido la segunda pago-

beforeMandalay took the honor away from it. From
that era, the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda survives, which
can be reached by crossing the appealing U Bien
Bridge.
Sagaing
Sagaing sits atop a hill devoured by its countless
temple, with the beautiful Kaunghmudaw pagoda
hidden behind. From there, all local guides will tell
travelers of the curious story that the monument
was erected taking the perfect bust of Queen
Amarapura as a model.
Mingun
The “deserted city” of Mingun offers travelers the
curiosity of the ruins that, if completed, would
have been the second-tallest pagoda in the world.
