Before sunset, and after saying our goodbyes
with immense pleasure, we walked back to the
campsite. I returned bewailed. Impulsed by the ex-
perience I decided to stay and help out Juan in the
camp, fact that made him happy, since he would
have a worthy chess opponent.
I stayed in Kenya a year, in collaboration with
the Maasai, specially in their education, and I can be
a witness to their courtesy, the affection they ema-
nate, the wisdom each and everyone of them owns,
and the pride they feel to know they are hearers of
ancestral warriors. Currently, they have suffered sys-
tematic displacement of their lands, deceptions, and
peoplewhowish to take their hunting grounds. All of
this, adds to thewater shortage, and the loss of cattle,
dragging the Maasai to diminish their numbers and
adopt sedentary ways of life, to search for jobs in the
city, and sell their culture for a fewdollars, to foreign-
ers that observe their attitude without understand-
ing it. Their current challenge as a society is to think
about a way to adapt to the world as it is presented
to them, with out losing their ancestral identity.
Antes del atardecer y luego de despedirnos con
un inmenso gusto, retomamos camino al campamen-
to. Realmente volví muy emocionado. Impulsado por
la experiencia, elegí quedarme y le ofrecí mi ayuda a
Juan en su campamento, hecho que lo contentó por
tener un rival digno para el ajedrez.
Aproximadamente un año estuve colaborando con
los Másai, especialmente en su educación. Puedo dar
fe de su cortesía, el afecto que emanan, la sabiduría
encerrada en cada uno de ellos y el orgullo que sienten
de reconocerse herederos de guerreros ancestrales.
Actualmente han sufrido sistemáticos desplazamien-
tos de sus tierras, y engaños, personas deseosas de
ocupar su tierra como zona de caza. Todo esto sumado
a la escasez de agua, la pérdida de cabezas de ganado,
arrastran a los Másai a ir disminuyendo su número y
adoptar formas sedentarias de vida, a buscar trabajo
en las ciudades, o aprender a cultivar, y vender su cul-
tura, por unos dólares, a los extranjeros que observan
esta actitud extrañados. Como sociedad su desafío
actual parece plantearse en como adaptarse al mundo
circundante sin perder su identidad ancestral.
