Naturaleza de la expresión
Tsodilo, en el desierto Kalahari, al extremo noroes-
te de Botswana y cerca de la frontera con Namibia,
es sitio de culto, pues lo habitan los espíritus an-
cestrales; así lo señala la cosmogonía africana,
porque es enseñanza activa sobre las habilidades
para sobreponerse a un ambiente hostil. Con for-
maciones de roca cuarcita solidificada, se levantan
de antiguas dunas de arena hacia el oriente y del
lecho fosilizado de un lago al ocaso.
Simbolizan este temple estético unas 4,500
pinturas rupestres, las que datan de los últimos
100,000 años aproximadamente. Comparten el
estilo con otras obras de la infancia de la humani-
dad, tanto en la técnica, los pigmentos y las formas
geométricas abstractas, de figura humana estiliza-
da (semejantes a las que tenemos en México en Baja
California) y de una gran variedad de fauna. Esta es
un crisol estético que se mantiene en el estampado
de la vestimenta, en las paredes de las viviendas y
en la pintura contemporánea, en la creación tridi-
mensional del tallado de madera y piedra, el mode-
lado de cerámica y en los tejidos.

The Nature of Expression
Tsodilo, in the Klahari desert, Northeast of Bo-
tswana, near the frontier with Namibia, is a
place of devotion inhabited by ancestral spirits,
as told by the African cosmogony; because it is
an active teaching of the skills to overcome a
hostile environment. With solidified quartzite
rocks formations, old sand dunes are raised to-
wards the East and a fossil lake bottom towards
the sunset.
About 4,500 cave paintings, dated ap-
proximately 100,000 years ago, symbolize this
aesthetic mettle. They share the style with
other works from the Humankind infancy, in
technique, pigments and abstract geometric
forms of a stylized human figure (similar to the
ones we have in Mexico, in Baja California) and a
great variety of fauna. This is the aesthetic melt-
ing pot that continues to be on the stamping of
the garments, on the walls of the abodes and on
the contemporary paintings; on the tridimen-
sional creation of the wood and stone carving,
and the modeling of ceramic and fabrics.
