Aun cuando el arrecife fue reclamado y anexado por
Madagascar en 1976, existe una disputa por su propiedad
entre Francia, la Unión de las Comoras y la misma Mada-
gascar, quienes más allá de un interés ecológico, buscan
el beneficio económico que podría resultar de la explota-
ción de su subsuelo, pues se habla de la posibilidad de la
presencia de campos petroleros cercanos. La Unión de las
Comoras argumenta que se encuentra dentro de las 200
millasdesuzonaeconómicaexclusiva (ZEE);mientrasque
desde el punto de vista francés, este arrecife es una de las
islas esparcidas en el Índico pertenecientes al Distrito de
Tierras Australes y Antárticas Francesas; lo que agranda la
zona económica exclusiva francesa del océano Índico.
Actualmente no existe ningún arbitraje reali-
zado por organismos oficiales para definir los lími-
tes entre la ZEE francesa, Comoras o Madagascar
en esta área.
Información geográfica
Ubicado en la parte norte del canal de Mozambi-
que, 125 km al noreste de Mayotte, 112 km al su-
roeste de las Islas Glorioso y a 200 km de la costa
noroeste de Madagascar.

And even if the reef was claimed and annexed by
Madagascar in 1976, there exists a dispute for its pos-
session among France, the Union of the Comoros and
Madagascar itself. All of them, more than an ecological
interest,seekeconomicgainthatmightcomeoutofthe
soil exploitation, because there is talkof a possibility of
nearby oil fields existence. The Union of the Comoros
argues that it is located within the 200 miles of its ex-
clusive economic zone (EEZ); while from the French
point of view this reef is one of the Scattered Islands in
the Indic Ocean belonging to the French Southern and
Antarctic Lands district, which enlarges the French ex-
clusive economic zone in the IndicOcean.
Currently, there is no arbitration being done by
any official organizations to settle the boundaries
between the FrenchZEE, the Comoros UnionorMada-
gascar in the region.
Geographic Information
Located in the northern part of the Mozambique
channel, 125 km from Mayotte north, 112 km from
the Glorioso Islands southwest, and 200 km from
the Madagascar northwest.
