Frucifer pardalis
o camaleón pantera es
originario de Madagascar. Puede encon-
trarse a lo largo de toda la costa este,
norte y en islas cercanas como Mauricio y
Reunión. Hay diferentes variedades, cada
una con colores y características propias, que reciben
el nombre del lugar en el que habitan.
Es una de las especies de camaleón más grande: los
machos pueden llegar a medir 50 cm, mientras que las
hembras entre 30 y 35 cm. Su esperanza de vida es de
sólo cuatro años, aunque en cautiverio algunos llegan a
vivir cinco o seis años. Son animales muy tranquilos y
dóciles, motivo por el cual es relativamente fácil mante-
nerlos como mascota siempre y cuando se mantengan
la temperatura, el espacio y la humedad adecuados.
Los ojos de los camaleones son independientes,
es decir, puede mirar para dos lados diferentes. Esto
le permite estar alerta por si hay depredadores cerca
o mientras se está alimentando. Cuando caza, ambos
ojos enfocan a la presa al momento de lanzar la lengua
y llevársela a la boca. Estos animales carecen de oído
interno y medio, es decir, poseen un sistema auditivo
muy básico y como muchos otros reptiles, cada cierto
periodo, realizan mudas para regenerar su piel

he Furcifer pardalis or panther chame-
leon is native of Madagascar, and can be
found along the north and east coasts,
and in the nearby isles like Mauricio
and Reunion. There are different va-
rieties, each one with its own colors and features,
named after the place it inhabits.
It is one of the largest chameleon species,
males may measure up to 50 cm while females 30
to 35 cm. Their life expectancy is just of four years
although in captivity they might reach five or six.
They are very still and docile animals, whichmakes
them relatively easy to keep as pets, provided that
the right temperature, humidity levels and space
be maintained.
Either eye of the chameleonmoves independently,
that is, each can look at two different sides. This allows
chameleons to be alert to nearby predators or while
they are feeding. When it hunts, both eyes focus on the
prey at themoment of hurling the tongue and sticking
it into its mouth. These animals lack inner and middle
ear, whichmeans that their auditory system is very el-
ementary; the same as many other reptiles, they shed
their skinafter certainperiodsof time for regeneration.
