unque muchas personas los relacionan
con otras especies de animales, los lému-
res pertenecen al orden de los primates,
esto significa que están emparentados
con los chimpancés, simios, y por su-
puesto, el hombre. Son endémicos de Madagascar y
existen alrededor de 50 especies diferentes. Entre las
más conocidas se encuentran el lémur de cola anillada,
el indri, el lémur ratón gris, el aye-aye y el lémur negro.
En la antigüedad, para los romanos y los etruscos,
los lémures eran los espíritus de la noche, conside-
rados generalmente como entes malignos que ator-
mentaban a los hombres. Debido a sus hábitos noc-
turnos y sus ojos reflectantes, casi fantasmagóricos,
Carlos Linneo (naturalista y botánico sueco, estable-
ció los sistemas para clasificar a los organismos vivos)
asignó el término a esta especie; sin embargo, estos
pequeños primates están lejos de ser una amenaza,
por el contrario, la mayoría están catalogadas como
especie amenazada o en peligro de extinción.

car. Amongst the best known species is the ring-
tailed lemur, the indri, the gray mouse lemur,
the aye-aye and the black lemur.
In the antiquity, for Romans and Etruscans
lemurs were spirits of the night, reckoned usu-
ally as evil entities haunting men. Due to their
nightly habits and their almost ghostly mirror-
ing eyes, Charles Linnaeus (Swedish natural-
ist and botanist, who established the system
to classify living things) assigned the name to
these species even though these small primates
are far from being a threat; on the contrary, most
of them are classified as an endangered or near
to extinction species.
