El verdadero “Halcón Maltés”

Esta emblemática ave, símbolo de libertad, poderío,

elevación y éxito, tiene un papel protagónico en la

concepción de Malta, al grado de ser un ícono de su

identidad, el cual ha trascendido su momento históri-

co para coronarse con impresiones en el arte y la cul-

tura de todo el mundo.

arrendó la isla a la Orden de Malta con su completa

soberanía a cambio un pago anual, el cual consistía

en un halcón amaestrado para la caza de cetrería; el

halcón maltés.

Este tributo fue entregado año con año –durante dos

siglos- por parte de la Orden al rey en el día de Todos los

Santos, hasta que ésta fue expulsada de Malta por parte

del ejército napoleónico. Sin embargo, el halcón maltés

continúa su vuelo y no sólomediante las artes de pintura,

escultura, literatura o cine

…

Existe un ejemplar cuyas alas –o en este caso ve-

las-, suman alrededor de 2,400 m

de superficie, y es

capaz de surcar los mares a 25 nudos de velocidad. Lle-

trata del velero más grande del planeta, con una eslora

pues fue construido por el astillero Perini Navi.

Regresando al halcón maltés histórico, en 2005

- 475 años después del primer tributo-, se recuperó

esta tradición en una ceremonia conmemorativa que

celebró a toda Europa y que recreó el acto entregan-

do a S.M. el rey don Juan Carlos, un halcón entrenado

para la cetrería a través del Real Gremio de Halcone-

ros de España.

Casualmente en 2005 también se celebrarían los pri-

meros 75 años de la novela “El Halcón Maltés” escrita por

Dashiell Hammett, que inaugurara el género negro tanto

para la literatura como para el cine y cuyas páginas inspi-

raríanmás de una producción cinematográfica, eclipsadas

todas por la que protagonizara Humphrey Bogart. El hal-

cón ficticio de este relato es una escultura cuya presencia

en Estados Unidos crea un caos por la avaricia de muchos

que desean poseerla, estableciendo quizá un paralelismo

muy lejano conel valor deMalta como joya de las conquis-

tas del viejomundo.

The real “Maltese Falcon”

This emblematic bird, a symbol of liberty, power,

elevation and success has a protagonist role in

Malta´

s conception, to the point of being an icon

for its identity; which has transcended its historic

moment to crown itself with impressions of art and

culture throughout the world.

It was in 1530 when king Charles V of Spain

rented the island to the Order of Malta with its com-

plete sovereign power in return of a yearly payment

which consisted of a falcon trained in the field for

hunting; the Maltese Falcon.

This tribute was paid year after year –for two

centuries- by the Order to the king on every All

Saints Day, until it was vanished by the Napole-

onic army. However, the Maltese Falcon does con-

tinue its flight, not only is it portrayed in paintings,

sculptures, literature or cinema…

A specimen whose wings –or in this case sails-

add nearly 2,400 m2 of surface and is capable of

plowing the seas with 25 knots of speed. It carried

the name “Halcón Maltés” (Maltese Falcon). We are

talking about the grandest sailboat on Earth, with

a length of 289 feet (88m) and whose origin is really

Italian, built by the Perini Navi shipyard.
