Antes de ser la Orden de Malta, este grupo tuvo

presencia en otros lugares como Chipre y Rodas,

donde desarrolló además una fuerza naval que

más adelante serviría para la defensa del territo-

rio maltés, al que arribó alrededor del año 1530,

de l’Isle Adam, con el apoyo del Papa Clemente VII.

Cabe mencionar que la Orden había prometido

no combatir contra otros cristianos cuando tomó

posesión de Malta, lo cual no le impidió defender

a la isla en lo que se denomina el Gran Asedio Tur-

co, donde durante casi cuatro meses bajo el mando

instauró el puerto de La Valletta y lo que hoy se

conoce como la capital de Malta, gracias a su fun-

dador y defensor.

En esta época reinó un ambiente de crecimien-

to en la isla, donde se construyeron imponentes

baluartes de defensa, así como edificios, iglesias,

escuelas y hospitales, además de desarrollarse las

artes, la medicina y el nivel académico de una po-

blación que jamás volvería a ser la misma.

La Orden de Malta también luchó contra inva-

sores otomanos y grupos de piratas, sin embargo

los turcos no se daban completamente por venci-

dos, lo que derivó en un gran episodio en la his-

toria maltesa: la Batalla de Lepanto. Esta victoria

por parte de la flota naval de la Orden, así como las

fuerzas del territorio, contuvo significativamente

el avance del Imperio Otomano hacia toda Europa.

Before the order of Malta was created, this group

had presence in other places such as Cyprus and

Rhodes, where it developed a naval force that in the

near future would serve as a defense for the Maltese

territory, towhich it arrived in the year 1530 in charge

of the great Maestre Frey Phillippe de Villiers de I’sle

Adam, with the support of Pope Clement VII.

It is important to mention that the Order had

promised to not combat other Christians when it

took possession of Malta, this didn’t come in the

way of defending the island in what is known as

The Great Turk Siege. Nearly four months under the

command of the Great Maestre Frey Jean de La Val-

lette succeeded in impeding the Turkish invasion.

It was by this time period that the La Valletta port

was created, as well as Malta’s Capital. This was in

honor of its defender and founder.

During this time period a general environment of

growth overtook the island; several important bas-

tions of defense were constructed, as well as build-

ings, schools, churches and hospitals. A development

in the arts soon followed, medicine and the academic

level of the populationwouldnever be the same.

The Order of Malta also fought against Ottoman

invaders and a group of pirates, however the Turk-

ish weren’t giving up so easily; this derived in one

of the greatest episodes of Maltese history: The

Battle of Lepanto. This victory on behalf of the naval

fleet of the Order, as well as the forces on the terri-

tory, sustained significantly the advance of the Oto-

man Empire throughout Europe.
