Concierto para Piano en lamenor, Op. 16
Estreno: Leipzig, Alemania, febrero 1872. En el espíritu
romántico y melodioso de Grieg, Tchaikovsky percibió a
un pariente creativo y con toda naturalidad usó super-
lativos para alabar este concierto: “¡Qué encanto! ¡Qué
calidez y pasión! Qué vitalidad
…
originalidad y belleza
…
”.
Hoy día el Concierto de Grieg nos excita menos. Allá por
los 40 y 50 se escuchó demasiado, fue apaleado hasta
la muerte y ha envejecido, un hecho que es claro por
la forma en que ha desaparecido del repertorio de los
pianistas de primer nivel. Solamente es justo agregar
que los que hemos cambiado somos nosotros, no el
Concierto. Su encanto juvenil, su frescura y su vigor
aún permanecen allí.

1872. In Grieg’s romantic, spirited melodious-
ness Tchaikovsky sensed a kindred spirit; and,
not unnaturally, he used superlatives in praise
of the Concerto: “What charm! What warmth and
passion! What teeming vitality…… originality
and beauty….”. Today, Grieg’s Concerto excites us
less. It has been heard too often, played to death
and it has aged, a fact reflected in its virtual
disappearance from the repertoire of most rank-
ing pianists. It is only fair to add that we have
changed, not the Concerto. Its youthful charm,
freshness and its vigor are still there.
