La más grande Stave Church del país es Heddal,
en el condado de Telemark, la cual consta de tres
naves, un ábside y un pórtico. El templo, dedicado
a la Virgen María, fue construido en el siglo XVIII. En
su interior cabe destacar la ricamente labrada silla
del obispo, el altar y las pinturas de las paredes que
datan de cuando fue construida. Según una leyenda
local, fue levantada en tres días por cinco agriculto-
res. Ha sido objeto de varias restauraciones en los
siglos XIX y XX; aún está en funciones y continua-
mente se celebran bodas, así como los tradicionales
servicios dominicales.
Existen diversos tipos de iglesias de madera, pero
todas están conformadas por un esqueleto con tablas
que hacen de pared, apoyándose en unos alféizares.
Además, la decoración de las stavkirker entremezcla
diseños cristianos con vikingos precristianos, como el
motivo del dragón entrelazado. Las puertas de made-
ra y remates están maravillosamente talladas.

The largest Stave Church in the Country is Hed-
dal, in the Telemark County, which has three naves
with an apse and a portico. The temple, dedicated
to the Virgin Mary, was built in the XVIII century.
In its interior it is worthmentioning the Chair of the
Bishopwhich is richlydecorated, the altar and theWall
paintings come from when it was built. According
to the local legend, it was built in three days by five
peasants. It has been subjected to various res-
torations in the XIX and XX centuries. It is still
functional and is constantly used for weddings,
as well as for the traditional Sunday services.
There are several types of wooden church-
es, but all are conformed by a skeleton made of
wood planks as walls, leaning on sills. Besides,
the decoration of the stavkirker mixes Christian
designs with pre-Christian Viking, like the in-
tertwined dragon motif. The wooden doors and
their finishing are wonderfully carved.
