Posee un clima de tipo cálido-seco y una tempera-
tura media anual de 24 a 32 °C, con dos temporadas im-
portantes en el año: de noviembre a febrero, con la
llegada de aficionados al kayac, al ecoturismo y al avis-
tamiento de la ballena gris, y de marzo a septiembre, la
mejor época para la pesca deportiva y el buceo.
Tiene una inigualable belleza escénica, conjunción
de mar, playa, desierto, montaña y una muralla natural
de cinco islas. Su entorno desértico posee una flora y
fauna únicas. Sus aguas templadas albergan especies
como el marlin, dorado, cola amarilla y delfines.
Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto
Pocas áreas marinas en el mundo tienen una importan-
cia y una riqueza biológica comparables con las del Mar
de Cortés (Golfo de California). La Bahía de Loreto y la Is-
la Espíritu Santo están clasificadas entre las más impor-
tantes de la región por su valor ecológico.
Las áreas marinas de la Bahía de Loreto y la Isla Es-
píritu Santo con sus islas, humedales, lagunas, mangla-
res y lechos de pastos marinos albergan abundante vida
silvestre, tanto terrestre como marina.
En esta reserva se encuentran 38 especies de plantas
y animales únicas en el mundo. El archipiélago de Espíritu
Santo protege 1,200 especies, y la cadena de cinco islas
de la Bahía de Loreto es hogar de 29 especies de mamífe-
ros marinos, más que ninguna otra área de México.
El lugar es frecuentado por 15 especies de balle-
nas, 17 de aves marinas y cinco de tortugas, entre
ellas, la tortuga prieta (
Chelonia agassizi
), en peligro
de extinción, que encuentra su alimento en los lechos
de pastos marinos.
Desarrollo turístico
Loreto es hoy un polo de desarrollo económico y turís-
tico de la región con cerca de 13,000 habitantes. Posee
una importante infraestructura: aeropuerto interna-
cional, estación telefónica, subestación eléctrica,
planta de tratamiento de aguas negras y vialidades su-

It has a hot, dry climate and an average annual
temperature of 24 to 32 degrees Centigrade (75 to 90
Fahrenheit), with two important seasons: November to
February marks the arrival of aficionados of kayaking,
ecotourism and whale watching; March to September
is the best time for sports fishing and scuba diving.
The natural setting, which combines sea, beach,
desert, mountains and a natural wall of five islands, is
unsurpassable. The surrounding desert is home to
unique speciesof floraand fauna. Itswarmwatershouse
species likemarlin, dorado, yellowtail and dolphins.
The Loreto Bay National Park
Fewmarine areas in the world have the importance and
biological richness of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of
California). Because of their ecological worth, LoretoBay
and Espíritu Santo Island have been classified among
the most important areas of the region.
The waters of Loreto Bay and Espíritu Santo, with
their islands, wetlands, lagoons,mangroves andbeds of
sea grass, are home to plentiful examples of wildlife,
both on land and sea.
In this reserve are 38 species of plants and animals
