I
was very pleased when I found out that this article was
going to be about Loreto, in the Sea of Cortez, because it
is one of those places that bring back fond memories.
Small Loreto is located in the central part of the Baja
California peninsula. The former capital of the Californias
and its first permanent mission, it was established by Juan
María de Salvatierra, a Jesuit priest, on October 25, 1697.
When visiting this place surrounded by wonderful
scenery, where the imposing Sierra de la Giganta, the mys-
tic desert and the incredible Sea of Cortez meet, you will
understandwhy this legendary Jesuit decided to settlehere.
I reached this small part ofMexicowith the dreamof see-
ing and filming whales, those giants of the sea, which, year
after year, arrive in Loreto’s nearby coral reefs. I had had few
chances to visit a place such as this one, where the sur-
roundings are arid and, at sunset, the cliffs reflect the rays of
the sun in an inimitable way. When I begin to dive into the
blue sea the last thing I see are the enormous cacti and a
land burnt by the desert sun. My feelings cannot grasp

uando me enteré que el artículo a escribir era
acerca de Loreto, en el Mar de Cortés, me sentí
contento, pues es uno de esos lugares que re-
cuerdo con un especial cariño. Cuando uno va a ese si-
tio se puede entender porqué el célebre jesuita lo
escogió para vivir: está enmarcado en un paisaje mara-
villoso, donde concurren la imponente Sierra de la Gi-
ganta, el místico desierto y el increíble Mar de Cortés.

, se encuentra en la Península de Baja Ca-
lifornia, en la parte central

Esta primera misión perma-
nente fue fundada por el padre jesuita Juan María de
Salvatierra el 25 de octubre de 1697.
Llegué a ese pequeño pedazo de patria con la ilu-
sión de ver y filmar a los gigantes del mar: las ballenas,
que se dan cita, año con año, en los arrecifes cercanos
a Loreto. Debo decir que muy pocas veces he tenido la
oportunidad de estar en un lugar como éste, tan parti-
cular, ya que alrededor es árido, y al caer la tarde los
