Archaeological

ruins are abundant

in St. Lucia

The presence of Caribs in Saint Lucia dur-

ing colonization has been confirmed. What isn’t

verifiable is that they practiced cannibalism, as

Spaniards attested. It is evident that they were

great strategists and brave warriors that kept

conquerors at bay through alliances with the in-

habitants of neighboring islands, until the end

of the 17th century. Saint Lucia’s best-known

archeological site is at Pointe de Caille, although

there are substantial areas of the island that

remain archeologically unexplored. Aboriginal

heritage survives within its descendants, in lan-

guage, in the name of some flowers, fruits, food,

and places.
