Escenario moderno-silvestre
Cuando el invierno golpea con gruesas capas de
nieve en las montañas de Anchorage, la ciudad se
ve habitada por nuevos integrantes: alces. Pasean
entre el barrio, aparecen por las calles o saludan al
vecino desde su jardín. Buscando resguardarse de las
bajas temperaturas y en busca de alimento, se vuel-
ve común encontrarse con alguno en el centro de la
ciudad. Aunque se trata de animales solitarios y ge-
neralmente tranquilos, el peligro que suelen repre-
sentar es ante el repentino cruce en carreteras que
lleva a accidentes automovilísticos, razón por la cual
también se reduce la manada al morir tras el impacto
de los coches, así como por la caza de los mismos.
El alce es el miembro gigante de la familia de los
cérvidos y puede considerarse el más característico
de Alaska. Es en este estado donde se encuentra la
subespecie más grande del mundo, alcanzando un
peso de hasta 800 kg en los machos y 600 kg en
hembras, así como una altura de entre 1.4 y 2 me-
tros, y entre 2.4 y 3.2 metros de largo.
Los machos poseen una vistosa y distintiva
cornamenta que los diferencian de las hembras,
quienes no tienen, y que les da estatus de liderazgo
entre la manada al contar con las astas más desa-
rrolladas, dependiendo de la edad. En tamaño, éstas
pueden abarcar 1,8 metros de extremo a extremo y
llegan a pesar hasta 20 kilos.

Modern and wild stage
When the winter season hits the mountains of
Anchorage with thick snowdrifts, the city gets
inhabited by new members: the moose. They
promenade around the neighborhood, appear
in the streets or greet the neighbor from his or
her garden. While they are trying to find shelter
from the low temperatures or looking for food, it
is common to bump into one of them downtown.
Even though they are aloof and in general calm
animals, the danger they usually pose is that by
suddenly crossing the roads, they provoke car
accidents, thus decreasing the herd; which also
dwindles due to their hunt.
The moose is the gigantic member of family
Cervidae and may be regarded as the most charac-
teristic of Alaska. It is in this state where the great-
est subspecies in the world are found. The male
may weigh up to 800 kg and the female, up to 600
kg; it may reach a height that ranges from 1.4 to 2
m and a length that ranges from 2.4 to 3.2 m.
The males have dazzling and distinguish-
ing antlers, marking them off the females which
have none. The more developed their antlers
may be, the greater leadership status they enjoy
in the herd, depending on the age. Their antlers
may reach 1.8 meters from side to side and may
weigh up to 20 kg.
