aquka-ac es como llamaban los Alutiiq,
antiguos pobladores del archipiélago de
Kodiak, al oso que, después de la última
glaciación hace 12,000 años, ha estado
aislado de otras especies de osos; se tra-
ta del Kodiak (Ursus arctos middendorffi) la subespecie
más grande de oso pardo y uno de los dosmiembrosmás
grandes de la familia de los osos (el otro es el oso Polar).
La tribu de los Alutiiq cazaba al Kodiak para tener
provisiones de comida, pieles para vestir y ropa de
cama; sin embargo le rendían honor, pues sus histo-
rias tradicionales hablan de la naturaleza mística de
éstos debido a su proximidad con el mundo de los es-
píritus; así como la similitud entre osos y humanos.
Si bien la región de Kodiak es un reconocido destino
depescaqueofrece acceso a las cincoespecies de salmón,
además de rodaballos, peces de roca, bacalaos y truchas;
también es la principal guarida de estos impresionantes
ejemplares color marrón y de pelaje abundante, ya que
ahí se encuentra el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de
Kodiak. Se tratadeuna reservade1’900,000hectáreas las
cuales albergan cerca de 3,500 osos, conmachos que nor-
malmente pesan entre 360 y 635 kg; peso que aumenta
conforme se acerca el invierno y comienzan a acumular
grasa para el periodo de hibernación.

fromother speciesof bears. Thisone is the
Kodiak (Ursus arctos middendorffi), the biggest brown
bear subspecies andone of the twobiggestmembers of
thebear family (being theother thepolar bear.)
The Alutiiq tribe hunted the Kodiak in order
to obtain food supplies, skins for dressing and
bed linen. Nevertheless, they honored it, their
lore speaks about its mystical nature due to its
proximity to the world of spirits, the same as the
similarity between bears and human beings.
Even though the Kodiak region is a well-
known fishing destination, offering access to
the 5 species of salmon, besides turbot, rockfish,
cod and trout; it is also the main shelter of these
impressive brown furry specimens. There it is
located the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, a
1,900,000 hectares reservation, which shelters
about 3,500 bears; with males weighing between
360 kg and 635 kg, weight that increases as the
winter season comes, since they start accumu-
lating fat for the hibernation period.
