brought a blue sky and we knew that our sail would
have to depend on the tides since the water disap-
pears from the estuaries and boats run aground on
the sands. We headed east, discovering a coast of
transparent jade water in which the chalky cliffs
have invented surprising nooks and crannies and
strange, isolated rocky forms. We found beautiful
beaches and coves, like Toró, Ballota and Franca, of
fine golden sand, and the famous Bufones de
Arenillas and Santiuste, where the sea has carved
holes in the rock so that, at high tide, the water rises
vertically at the same time that they “snort”.
Sailing to the west with the wind in our sails
we saw fine looking beaches, like Cobijeru and
Gulpiyuri, where we found gorgeous coves of
turquoise water, a small island with a natural arch,
a narrow strait hidden among rocks in which only
a small boat can fit and surprising low cliffs.
Thewindwas very calmand, whenwe passed the
Barro andSanAntolínbeaches, fog invaded the coast,
eating the cliffs and making navigation difficult.
Because of the lack of windwe had to use themotor.
In this way, we reached the Ribadesella
Estuary, admiring the fabulous Santa Marina
beach framed by the unbelievable homes of the
“Indianos”. We docked in the small port to visit
the main plaza of Ribadesella, with its houses
adorned with coats of arms, and especially the
extraordinary Tito Bustillo cave, in which we saw
superb, perfectly preserved Paleolithic cave paint-
ings representing horses and reindeer.
We sailed to the west, discovering a coast of
cliffs and, thanks to a favorable wind, we reached
Lastres, one of the most beautiful ports of the area.
It is a typical village built in themiddle of the rocks
that descend to the Bahía de la Griega.
perfectamente preservadas y representando unos
caballos o renos.
El Toro Beach, at the port of Llanes,
has many visitors in the summer
