Su nombre proviene de Atropatene -reino que

ocupó este territorio y que fue gobernado por Darío

el Grande de Persia y por Alejandro Magno a partir del

siglo IV a. C.- el nombre fue derivando en Aturpatakan;

Adharbadhagan; Adharbayagan; Azarbaydjan; Azerbai-

jan, que significa "el tesoro, el tesorero del fuego o la

tierra del fuego". También se apunta que el nombre pro-

cede de las palabras: azer – fuego y baykan - vigilante.

Comparte fronteras con Rusia, Georgia, Armenia e

Irán. El enclave – Karabaj y el exclave Naxcivan, co-

lindan con Turquía. La cordillera del Cáucaso domina

el paisaje del país, por otro lado el Mar Caspio es re-

ferente protagónico en su geografía. Su ubicación es

idónea para conectar las redes de transporte terres-

tre y los mercados de Europa, Asia, Oriente Medio y la

región mediterránea. Azerbaiyán puede enlazar China

y otros países de Asia a Europa, así como de la India e

Irán a Rusia; también las rutas de transporte maríti-

mo y fluvial involucran su territorio.

El viajero que llega a Azerbaiyán puede realizar

infinidad de actividades: disfrutar de playas; hoteles

de lujo; centros históricos; de culto; museos; teatros;

montañas; bosques; lagos; centros de esquí en las nie-

ves del Cáucaso; reservas naturales, turismo de spa o

de salud, entre otros.

Its name comes the Atropatene, a kingdom that

occupied this territory, and which was governed by

Darius the Great of Persia, and Alexander the Great be-

ginning in the 4th century B.C. The name was derived

from Aturpatakan; Adharbadhagan; Adharbayagan;

Azarbaijan; Azerbaijan, whichmean, “the treasure, the

fire treasurer, or the land of fire.” It is also supposed

that the name comes from the words: azer -- fire, and

baykn -- vigilant. It shares its borders with Russia,

Georgia, Armenia, and Iran. The BergKarabachenclave

and the Naxcivan exclave borders with Turkey. The

Caucasus mountain range dominates the country’s

scenery; moreover, the Caspian Sea is a geographi-

cal landmark. Its location is ideal for merging the

network of road and markets of Europe, Asia, Middle

East, and the Mediterranean region. Azerbaijan can

link China with other countries in Asia and Europe, as

well as India with Iran, and Russia. Maritime and river

trade routes also span across the country.

Travellers who reach Azerbaijan can take part in

an infinite amount of activities: enjoying the beach-

museums; the forests; the lakes; the skiing centers

on the snows of the Caucasus; the natural reserves;
