mansions that overlook the spectacular panorama and sailed
along the border of the golf course, one of the most beautiful
in Europe. After an hour we reached elegant Biarritz, with its
genuine palaces built on the rocks and the “Palais”, which
stands as a witness to the life of this great city and where we
stayed after docking the yacht in the small port lying at the
foot of the cathedral. Le Palais is a fabulous, graceful hotel
that was originally the “Villa Eugenie”, the summer home of
Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, who had become enamored
with this place. They made Biarritz and its fine air fashionable
and the nobility built their mansions there.
In 1892, the Republic replaced the Second Empire, the
Villa was turned into a hotel and the aristocracy arrived, the
city was adorned by beautiful residencies and this beautiful
era was lit it up by its casino, theater, parties, movie celebri-
ties and European elite. It was crowned the queen of the
Basque Coast. The “Rocher de la Vierge” is a group of rocks
lashed the strong waves, protected by a Virgin that appears
to direct the ocean, and the lighthouse encloses that beauti-
ful beach adorned by the Le Palais, other hotels and
Talasotherapy centers, the casino, the church and the hous-
es with unusual witch-hunting towers.
Biarritz, that charming, international corner of the
Basque Coast, is a beach for surfing or for being seen and the
city is perfect for enjoying the cuisine and celebrations.
Biarritz-Hossegor
After enjoying the elegant city, its exquisite gastronomy
and the charm of “Le Palais”, we continued on our route
towards the north to discover that, passing the Biarritz
lighthouse and all the way to Bordeaux, we would encounter
a flat coast of long beaches of golden sand and hard waves.
Passing Anglet and a strong barrier we entered the mouth of
the Adour River and reached Bayonne, an authentic, active
esperaban las olas, admiramos mansiones que dominan
un espectacular panorama costeando el campo de golf,
uno de los más bellos de Europa. Después de una hora lle-
gamos a Biarritz, la elegante, con sus auténticos palacios
asentados sobre las rocas y el “Palais” que cuenta la vida
de esa gran ciudad y donde nos alojamos después de atra-
car el yate en el pequeño puerto al pie de la catedral. Le
Palais es un fabuloso y elegante hotel que originalmente
fue la “Villa Eugénie”, casa de veraneo de Napoleón III y la
emperatriz Eugenia que se había enamorado del lugar.
Ellos son los que pusieron de moda a Biarritz, con su buen
aire y los nobles se construyeron mansiones.
En 1893, la República reemplazó el segundo imperio,
la Villa se volvió hotel y la aristocracia acudía, la ciudad se
adornaba de hermosas residencias, la bella época la alum-
bró con su casino, su teatro, sus fiestas, las estrellas de
cine y la elite europea la alzaron al nivel de soberana de la
costa vasca. El “Rocher de la Vierge” es un conjunto de
rocas que se adentran entre las fuertes olas, protegidas
por una virgen que parece dirigir el océano; el faro encie-
rra esa bella playa decorada por Du Palais, otros hoteles o
centros de talasoterapia, el casino, la iglesia y las casas
con extrañas torres cazadoras de brujas.
Biarritz es la playa para el surfing o para ser visto, la
ciudad para disfrutar de la comida y de las fiestas, es un
encantador rincón de la costa vasca con un tempera-
mento internacional.
Biarritz-Hossegor
Después de gozar de la refinada ciudad, su exquisita
cocina y el encanto de Du Palais continuamos nuestra
ruta hacia el norte para descubrir que pasando el faro
de Biarritz y hasta Bordeaux nos esperaba una costa
plana de largas playas de arena dorada y fuertes olas.
