panorama sorprendente: la gran duna del Pilat, imponente
montaña de arena de 105 m de altura, 2.7 km de largo y
500 m de ancho. Es un coloso frágil, cercenada al oeste por
el océano y el viento, y desde su altura la vista se abre
sobre el estuario cerrado por el cabo Ferret donde los ban-
cos de arena, “le Banc d’Anguin”, cambian al ritmo de las
mareas y constituyen una reserva natural para los pájaros.
Después de admirar ese impactante paisaje penetra-
mos en Le Bassin d’Arcachon, con su isla de los pájaros (que
pasa de tener 300 ha con marea alta a 1,000 ha con marea
baja, mundo favorito de una gran variedad de pájaros), y las
cabañas “tchanquées”. Esas cabañas sobre pilotes (“tchan-
que” significa zancos en gascón, la lengua local) fueron
construidas para los cuidadores de los criaderos de ostras
y esas siluetas sorprendentes, símbolo del bassin, se des-
tacan sobre el horizonte. Las ostras d’Arcachon son famo-
sas y exquisitas, un manjar de las mesas parisinas.
En el fondo del Bassin desemboca el río Leyre, cre-
ando un delta muy ramificado, salvaje, con vegetación
abundante y gran variedad de pájaros. Por eso se ha cre-
ado el parque ornitológico de Teich, de 120 ha, donde se
cuentan más de 250 especies, situado sobre el eje
migratorio entre Europa del Norte y África.
El Bassin ofrece más de 3,500 lugares de anclaje para
descubrir unas playas encantadoras, pero es una navega-
ción difícil por las corrientes, bancos de arena, mareas,
criaderos de ostras. Con marea baja dos tercios del Bassin
son descubiertos y se navega por los canales. La Pinasse,
el barco tradicional pintado de colores vivos, creado hace
más de 350 años, tiene una línea de flote baja, fondo
plano, y una pequeña cabina en la parte delantera, pero
sus extremidades son idénticas, lo que le permite navegar
(345 ft) high, 2.7 km (1.67 mi) long and 500 m (1,640 ft)
wide. It is a fragile giant, reduced to the east by the
ocean and the wind, and, from the top, the view opens
towards the estuary closed by Ferret Cape, where the
sand banks, “le Banc d’Anguin”, change to the rhythm of
the tides and form a natural reserve for birds.
After admiring this impressive scene we entered Le
Bassin d’Arcachon, with its bird island, which, at high
tide, has 300 hectares (741 acres) and, at low tide, 1,000
hectares (2,471 acres); and the “tchanquées” cabins.
These cabins on stilts (“tchanque” means stilts in
Gascon, the local language) were built by the caretakers
of the oyster farms and their surprising silhouettes,
symbol of the Bassin, stand out against the horizon.
The renowned, exquisite d’Arcachon oysters are a deli-
cacy served in Parisian tables.
The Leyre River flows into the Bassin, creating a wild
delta with many ramifications, abundant vegetation and
a great variety of birds. This is why the Teich Ornithology
Park was created here. Located in the migratory path
between north Europe and Africa, it has an area of 120
hectares (296 acres) and over 250 species
The Bassin offers more than 3,500 places to dock
and from where you can set out to discover the
enchanting beaches though sailing is difficult because
of the currents, sand banks, tides and oyster farms. At
low tide, two thirds of the Bassin is exposed and sailing
is done in the canals. La Pinasse, the traditional boats
painted in bright colors and created over 350 years ago,
have a low floating line, flat bottom and a small cabin
towards the front but its two extremes are the same,
which permits them to sail both ways without turning
