En 1815, se decide en el Congreso de Viena la
unión obligatoria de los Países Bajos del Norte y
del Sur. Tras la huida de Napoleón de Elba a Francia,
Guillermo Federico se proclamó rey del nuevo Rei-
no de los Países Bajos: Guillermo I. Las provincias
del sur se separaron en 1830 y en 1839 los Países
Bajos reconocieron el nuevo reino en el Tratado de
Londres.
Hasta 1839, Luxemburgo también formo parte
del Reino de los Países Bajos. Posteriormente, estuvo
vinculado como Gran Ducado en una unión personal
con los Países Bajos. El rey era también gran duque de
Luxemburgo. Dicha unión personal terminó en 1890.
Tras el fallecimiento del rey Guillermo III, su hija Gui-
llermina no pudo suceder a su padre en Luxemburgo
por ser mujer. El jefe de la otra rama de la Casa Nassau
fue quien sucedió al rey Guillermo III como gran Duque
de Luxemburgo.
Hasta después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el Rei-
no de los Países Bajos también tenía territorios de ultra-
mar: las Indias Holandesas en Asia, y Surinam, así como
las Antillas Holandesas en el hemisferio occidental.
In 1815, it was decided at the Congress of Vien-
na a mandatory union of the Northern and south-
ern Netherland. After Napoleon’s escape from Elba
to France, William Frederick was proclaimed king
of the new Kingdom of the Netherlands: becoming
William I. The southern provinces were separated
in 1830 and in 1839 the Netherlands recognized the
new kingdom in the Treaty of London.
Until 1839, Luxembourg also became part of
the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Later, it was
linked as Grand Duchy in personal union with
the Netherlands. The king was also Grand Duke of
Luxembourg. This personal union ended in 1890.
After the death of King William III, his daughter
Wilhelmina could not succeed his father in Lux-
embourg as a woman. The head of the other branch
of the House who happened to be Nassau was King
William III as Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
After the Second World War, the Kingdom of the
Netherlands also had oversea territories: the Dutch
East Indies in Asia, and Suriname as well as the
Netherlands Antilles in the western hemisphere.
