En ese periodo, comenzaron a separarse paulatina-
mente las provincias del norte y del sur, sobre todo por-
que la rebelión protestante contra el dominio católico
español arraigó mucho más fuertemente el norte que el
sur. Desde 1585, La Haya se convirtió en sede fija de las
reuniones de los Estados Generales. Entre 1588 y 1795,
los Estados Generales fueron la reunión de la República
de las Siete Provincias Unidas (Güeldres, Holanda, Zelan-
da, Utrecht, Frisia, Overijssel y Groninga).
Los estatúderes, que también eran príncipes de
Orange, solían ocupar (normalmente por encargo de
los Estados Generales) el cargo de capitán general y de
almirante general de la unión de las siete provincias.
Cuando el estatúder Guillermo V huyó a Inglaterra
en enero de 1795, se proclamó la República Bátava. Los
Estados Generales fueron disueltos y se creó en su lu-
gar una Asamblea Nacional. Al terminar la dominación
francesa en 1813, Guillermo Federico regresó, hijo del
anterior estatúder, y fue proclamado en 1814 príncipe
soberano. En 1815 pasó a ser el rey Guillermo I.
In that period, provinces North and South began
splintering, especially since the Protestant rebellion
against Spanish Catholic rule much more strongly
rooted in the north than in the south. Since 1585,
TheHague became the permanent seat of the General
States Meeting. Between 1588 and 1795, the General
States began to meet in the Republic of the Seven
United Provinces (Gelderland, Holland, Zealand,
Utrecht, Friesland, Overijssel and Groningen).
The stadtholders, who were also princes of Or-
ange, used to occupy (usually commissioned by the
General States) the position of captain general and
admiral general of the union of the seven provinces.
When the stadtholder William V fled to Eng-
land in January 1795, the Batavian Republic was
proclaimed. The General States dissolved and in its
place a National Assembly was created. At the end of
French rule in 1813, William Frederick returned, son
of the last stadtholder, and in 1814 was proclaimed
sovereign prince. In 1815 he became KingWilliam I.
