The slowness of the cedars is proverbial, not
only they are slow in growth of the trunk, but have
also slowed all cycles. For example, the pollina-
tion and fertilization process takes place in a time
length of a year and a half, the cones reachmaturity
between the second and third years.
Despite owning a wood highly prized by the an-
cient Greeks and Romans, in languages like Greek
the term “kedros” is used commercially to desig-
nate wood of any tree, this species was unknown in
Western Europe for a long time. As proof, the great
botanist Carl von Linne systematizer (1707-1778)
acknowledges having seen only a single specimen,
just the first to be planted in England in 1638 or ac-
cording to other sources, in 1670 or 1680.
Due to its considerable size, its evergreen foli-
age and its excellent and incorruptible wood, it ap-
pears as a symbol of greatness, nobility and persis-
tence in many ancient communities who used the
wood and resin to preserve and cherish it.

Es proverbial la lentitud de los cedros, pues no
solo son lentos en el crecimiento del tronco, sino que
tienen ralentizado todos los ciclos vitales. Por ejem-
plo, entre la polinización y la fecundación transcurre
aproximadamente un año y medio, los conos alcanzan
la madurez entre el segundo y el tercer año.
A pesar de poseer una madera apreciada por los anti-
guos griegos y romanos, y que en idiomas como el grie-
go se utilice el término “kedros” comercialmente para
designar la madera de cualquier árbol, esta especie fue
desconocida enEuropaoccidental durantemucho tiempo.
Como prueba de ello, el gran botánico sistematizador Carl
vonLinné (1707-1778) reconocehaber vistosolounúnico
ejemplar, justamente el primero que se plantó en Inglate-
rra en 1638, o según otras fuentes, en 1670 o 1680.
Debido a su talla considerable, a su follaje perenne
y a su madera excelente e incorruptible, aparece como
emblema de grandeza, nobleza y persistencia en nume-
rosos pueblos antiguos que utilizaron su madera y su
resina para preservar y atesorar lo que más apreciaban.
