t the southern tip of the African continent is
Cabo da Boa Esperança
, a cape that is a challenge
to sailors. Like a finger pointing to the South
Pole, it is one of the most beautiful, dramatic and mag-
nificent places in the world, where waves pound the
cliffs or hide, far from the protected bays.
South Africa is one of the most beautiful coun-
tries, with a wide variety of scenery, tours and sur-
prises. We had already covered the sea route between
Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay and this time we
decided to explore the peninsula and other charming
spots around the country, to find out more about its
natural attractions. In Johannesburg we discovered
attractive shopping centers, residential neighbor-
hoods, the gold mine and the modern downtown area
that has been abandoned by businesspeople.
From Capital Park to Cape Town
We headed for Pretoria, the capital, hidden amidst
green hills, to take Rovos Rail “The Pride of Africa,” the
most luxurious train in the world. Each car has three
suites, each with its own living area and bathroom.
The restaurant, which has kept its wood décor, serves
excellent gourmet cuisine accompanied by the finest
South African wines. The bar is very cozy and the last
car is ideal for spending the afternoon reading and
enjoying the small outdoor terrace.
At 4 p.m. we left the private station in Pretoria,
Capital Park, which is renowned for its colonial archi-
tecture, rode through Johannesburg at sunset, and
started on a journey through the southern plains.
At 8 a.m. we arrived in Kimberley, where the trol-
ley took us on a tour of the streets that evoke images
of the “far west.” Kimberly is the world’s most impor-
tant diamond mine, where some of the most extraor-
dinary specimens have been found, and where all
trade is carried out. Big Hole is the largest man-made

ñala hacia el Polo Sur, es uno de los más bellos escena-
rios del planeta, dramático y magnífico, donde las olas
azotan los acantilados o se esconden lejos de las ba-
hías protegidas.
Sudáfrica es uno de los países más hermosos, con
gran variedad de paisajes, de excursiones y de sorpre-
sas. Si bien habíamos recorrido la ruta marítima entre
Cape Town y Plettenberg Bay, esta vez decidimos explo-
rar la península y otros encantadores puntos del país,
conociendo más de su naturaleza. En Johannesburgo
descubrimos sus atractivos centros comerciales, sus
zonas residenciales, la mina de oro y el centro moderno,
hoy en día abandonado por los hombres de negocio.
De Capital Park a Cape Town
Nos trasladamos a Pretoria, la capital escondida entre

, el más lujoso del mundo. Cada vagón alberga
tres suites con su propia salita y baño, el restaurante ha
conservado su decorado de madera y sirve una excelen-
te comida de alta cocina acompañada con los mejores
vinos sudafricanos. El bar es un verdadero salón acoge-
dor y el último vagón es ideal para pasar la tarde leyen-
do y gozar de la pequeña terraza abierta.
Salimos a las 16:00 de la estación privada en Preto-
ria, Capital Park, en la que destaca su arquitectura colo-
nial, pasamos Johannesburgo cuando el sol decaía, y nos
adentramos en los llanos del sur.
A las 8:00 llegamos a Kimberley, donde el tranvía nos
paseó por calles surgidas del
far west
. Kimberley es la mi-
na de diamantes más importante del mundo, en la que se
han encontrado los más extraordinarios ejemplares, y
donde se hacen todas las transacciones mercantiles.
