Towns, Capes, Bays and Marinas
The side winds blew stronger and stronger, the sky was
getting cloudy, and we arrived at the end of the bay,
passing the small fishing village of Kommetjie, famous
for good surfing, longwaves and shellfish. The Slangkop
lighthouse marks the beginning of the wildest area, the
Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where waves attack
the cliffs and winds lash against the grazing land and
the feathers of the ostriches feeding near the white
sand beaches and the turquoise sea.
Here, the trees are like shrubs, the vegetation is
subjected to the violent weather, fynbos (a flower that
is native to the region, with petals in tones of pink or
orange) abound, and baboons search for food while
avoiding the antelopes. The waves were very high,
with deep tunnels and, because of the headwinds, we
decided to lower the sails and continue with the
motor. The landscape was impressive, with high
mountains that plunge into the sea, dominated by
two lighthouses. There, surging before us, was the
greatly feared Cape of Good Hope. This is the end of
Africa, where the Earth looks south to perpetually ice-
covered Antarctica, although Cape Agulhas, to the
east, is actually the southernmost point.
Right after we passed jagged Cape Point, we
entered False Bay. The winds died down, the sea
became calm, almost by witchcraft, and the sun was

estaba nublando, y llegamos al final de la bahía para pa-
sar el pequeño pueblo pesquero de Kommetjie, famoso
por su buen surfing, sus olas largas y sus mariscos. El
Faro de Slangkop marca el principio de una zona más
salvaje, el Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, donde las
olas atacan los acantilados, los vientos azotan los pasti-
zales y las plumas de los avestruces, que comen cerca
de las playas de arena blanca y del mar turquesa.
En esta zona los árboles son como arbustos, la ve-
getación se somete al poderío del clima violento, abun-
dan las
fynbos
(flor endémica de la región, con pétalos
en tonos rosa o naranja), y donde algunos babuinos bus-
can su comida evitando los antílopes. Las olas estaban
muy altas y con profundos socavones, decidimos bajar
las velas, por los vientos contrarios, y seguir con motor.
El paisaje impresionaba, con sus altas montañas que
caen al mar, adornadas por los dos faros que las domi-
nan, y donde surge el Cabo de Buena Esperanza, el tan
temido, el fin de África, donde la Tierra mira hacia el sur
y a los hielos eternos del Antártico, aunque el cabo
Agulhas, hacia el este, es el punto más sureño.
Cape Point es una zona accidentada y luego de pasarla
entramos en False Bay. Los vientos cesaron, el mar se tran-
quilizó, como hechizado, y el sol se reflejaba en las monta-
ñas del este que cierran la bahía con el Cabo Hangklip.
