reflected on the mountains to the east that frame the
baywith Cape Hangklip. We sailed towardMuizenberg,
where we would be leaving the boat, but we had suffi-
cient time to explore the eastern coast of the peninsu-
la, outlined by the mountains and enlivened by the
towns. There was a light southerly breeze, whichmade
for calm sailing. We stopped in Smitswinkel Bay to
walk on the beach and found some abalone fishermen
who where selling their catch.
When we arrived at the exceptionally beautiful
Simon’s Town marina, we docked at the wharf to ex-
plore this charming place, with its air of yesteryear,
enlivened by restaurants serving the finest seafood,
shops and a fishing village. We visited nearby Boulders
Beach, which a large colony of penguins has been ca-
lling home much before the arrival of man.
The coast is a long extension of white sand beaches
andcliffs,andopenbaysthatshelterfishingvillages,like
FishHoek. Planes stretchout along the foot of themoun-
tains, creating an immense beach that continues up to
Somerset West. We left the sailboat in Muizenberg, a
sleepyport, happytohavesailedaroundtheCapeofGood
Hope, an emotional experience that was complicated by
strong waves and gusts of wind. Awaiting us were fabu-
lous accommodations in The Cellars-Hohenort, an ele-
gant mansion hidden in an exceptionally beautiful
garden at the foot of TableMountain.
Nuestra navegación nos llevaba hacia Muizenberg, don-
de dejaríamos el barco, pero teníamos suficiente tiempo
para conocer la costa este de la península, dibujada por
las montañas y animada por sus pueblos. La brisa era le-
ve, de dirección sur, lo que permitía un viaje tranquilo.
Nos detuvimos en Smitswinkel Bay para explorar la pla-
ya y nos encontramos con unos pescadores de abulón
que estaban vendiendo su pesca.
Al llegar a la bellísima marina de Simon’s Town
atracamos en su muelle para conocer el encantador
pueblo con sabor de antaño, animado por sus restau-
rantes, donde se comen los mejores mariscos y pesca-
dos, y por sus tiendas y el puerto pesquero. Visitamos
la cercana Playa de Boulders, donde una importante
colonia de pingüinos se instaló desde antes que llega-
ra el hombre blanco.
La costa es una sucesión de playas de arena blanca
y acantilados, de bahías abiertas donde se alojan los
pueblos de pescadores, como Fish Hoek, y la llanura se
abre al pie de las montañas para crear la inmensa playa
hasta Somerset West. Muizenberg es el tranquilo puer-
to donde dejamos el velero, felices de haber pasado el
Cabo de Buena Esperanza y con inmensa emoción eriza-
da por las fuertes olas y las ráfagas de viento. Nos espe-
raba un fabuloso hogar en The Cellars-Hohenort,
elegante mansión escondida en un jardín arreglado con
cuidados excepcionales, al pie de Table Mountain.
