We visited the towns of Grazamela, with its typical,
well-preserved architecture surrounded by the pine
forest of the Sierra de Grazamela Natural Park; Gaucin,
with a fabulous view of the rock of Gibraltar and the
Moroccan coast; Zahara de la Sierra and its castle,
Setenil with its homes built on the cliff overlooking
the Trejo River, and Arcos, a beautiful city located on
the rim of a canyon. We also discovered Antequera,
577 m above sea level, with its ancient downtown
area, its Alcazaba, a true jewel of the sierra, the
Nuestra Señora del Carmen church with its beautiful
baroque altar, which sets it apart from other churches
in the city and, in the Parador we enjoyed excellent
Andalusian cuisine prepared with the finest olive oil.
We toured Menga Dolmens, Viera and El Romeral and
El Torcal, a natural park where we trekked among
strangely shaped rocks.
Behind Gibraltar’s Door
After all the partying and good food, Amura’s sailboat
took us south to discover amore peaceful world. Along
the coast, the long beaches of San Pedro de Alcántara
and Estepona spread out along the base of the Ronda
and Bermeja mountains. They go on till they die in the
sea, forming the beautiful rock of Gibraltar, standing
guard over the strait of the same name.
Gibraltar is a multifaceted mountain. An English
colony in Spanish territory, it is considered one of
Hercules’ pillars and the only place in the country
where you will find a community of monkeys. Its
name is of Arabic origin: in the eight century, when
Commander Tarik crossed the Strait to conquer Spain,
he called it “Djebel Tarik”, Tarik’smountain. It protects
Gaucín, con una fabulosa vista del Peñón de Gibraltar y
las costas de Marruecos, Zahara de la Sierra y su casti-
llo, Setenil con sus casas construidas en el acantilado
del río Trejo y Arcos de la frontera, hermosa ciudad al
borde de un barranco. Descubrimos también Antequera,
a 577 m de altura, con su casco antiguo y su Alcazaba,
verdadera joya de la sierra; su iglesia de Nuestra Señora
del Carmen, con su hermoso retablo barroco, que desta-
ca entre todas las bellas iglesias de la ciudad, y en el Pa-
rador disfrutamos de una excelente cocina andaluza con
el mejor aceite de oliva. Visitamos los Dólmenes de
Menga, Viera y El Romeral, y El Torcal, parque natural
donde hicimos

entre rocas de extrañas formas.
Tras la puerta de Gibraltar
Después de tanta fiesta y buena comida el velero de
Amura nos llevó hacia el sur a descubrir un mundo más
tranquilo. A lo largo de la costa las extensas playas de
San Pedro de Alcántara y Estepona se extienden al pie
de la serranía de Ronda y la Sierra Bermeja, hasta que
ésta va a morir en el mar para formar el hermoso Peñón
de Gibraltar, vigilante del estrecho que lleva su nombre.
Gibraltar es un monte multifacético: colonia inglesa
en territorio español, considerado como uno de los pila-
res de Hércules, su nombre es de origen árabe (el co-
mandante Tarik cruzó el Estrecho en el siglo VIII para
conquistar España y lo llamó “Djebel Tarik”, montaña de
Tarik), único lugar de España donde vive una colonia de
monos. Protege la enorme bahía que vigila el puerto
de Algeciras, donde abordan todos los ferrys que nave-
gan entre España y Marruecos.
Cruzamos el Estrecho en su zona más angosta, en-
tre Gibraltar y Ceuta. Ceuta es una ciudad insólita, entre
