l invierno es la temporada más larga. La prime-
ra nieve cae en la mitad de septiembre, los
lagos, los ríos y las bahías se congelan. La
magia del invierno empieza. Las temperaturas bajan
desde -25 hasta -40 °C. El cielo suele ser azul pero el
clima puede cambiar en segundos, y las tormentas
aparecen en un parpadeo. El sol sale algunas horas.
La noche parece eterna y es helada, con un cielo lleno
de estrellas. Y de repente aparecen las luces boreales
con colores verde, rosa y púrpura.
En verano los días son más largos, la nieve se
eclipsa. En junio, los lagos se descongelan, los mos-
quitos aparecen. La noche es breve, el sol baja en el
horizonte y desaparece por algunos minutos dejan-
do su resplandor, las estrellas no se aprecian. Es
la época para observar a los caribúes y sus crías, la
migración de aves, como patos y gansos, la migra-
ción de salmones, desde los lagos hacia el mar, y la
llegada de las ballenas.
En agosto, las flores árticas estallan en tonos
vivos, y pronto se cosechan los frutillos. Se han
registrado 433 plantas diferentes en ese mundo de
las largas sombras, por ejemplo, achilleas, anémo-
nas, cárex, chamerion, eriophorum, juncos, minuar-
tias, pediculares, rododendros, y saxífragas. Crecen y
florecen en ese corto verano, inundando color a la
tundra, invitando a los insectos a encontrar su ali-
mento. La magia del verano está en el aire y los inuits
instalan sus campamentos.

he winter is the longest season. The first snow
falls in the middle of September, the lakes, the
rivers and the bays freeze. The winter magic
begins. The temperatures descend from -25 to -40 °C.
The sky often is blue but the weather can change in
seconds, and storms appear in a blink. The sun comes
out for a few hours. The night seems eternal and it is
freezing, with a sky filled with stars. And suddenly
the Northern Stars appear with green, pink and pur-
ple colors.
During the summer the days are longer, the snow
eclipses. In June, the lakes defrost, and the mosqui-
toes appear. The night is brief, the sun lowers in the
horizon and disappears for some minutes leaving its
shining, and the stars cannot be appreciated. Is the
season to observe the caribous and their offspring’s,
the bird’s migration, like ducks and goose, the migra-
tion of salmons, from the lakes to the sea, and the
arrival of the whales.
In August, the artic flowers burst in live colors,
and soon the fruits are harvested. There have been
433 different plants registered in this world of the
long shadows, for example, achilles, anemones, carex,
chamerion, eriophorum, bulrush, minuartias, reticu-
lates, rhododendrons, and saxifrages. They grow and
blossom in this short summer, flooding the tundra
with color, inviting the insects to find their food. The
magic of the summer is in the air and the Inuit’s
install their camps.
