alcanzamos la gran playa al final del golfo, punto más
alejado del mar, y sin embargo lasmareas descubren la
arena, lugar favorito de los mosquitos que atacan
como un ejército bien formado.
Un coche nos esperaba para regresar a Umiujaq,
a sólo media hora, atravesando el último bosque
boreal de pinos enanos. En la tenue oscuridad de la
una de la madrugada nos encontramos con un lobo
que buscaba su cena de medianoche.
La región de Umiujaq es soberbia, con caracterís-
ticas geográficas impresionantes, y más allá, los
lagos, los ríos, las colinas, esconden tesoros de la
naturaleza. La costa es un sinfín de encantadores
rinconcitos con playas al pie de las colinas.
Puvirnituq
El avión nos llevó más al norte, a Puvirnituq, el pue-
blo más importante de Nunavik, situado a la orilla del
río, en una zona llena de lagos y ríos en medio de la
tundra donde no crecen árboles. Es un pueblo muy
activo, con un hospital que recibe pacientes de luga-
res remotos, con un hotel muy acogedor, dos super-
mercados... y en el que los inuits salen a las calles
con cualquier pretexto. Los niños juegan a la orilla

A car awaited us for our return to Umiujaq, only
a half hour away, whisking us across the last
northern forest of midget pines. In the tenuous
darkness at one in the morning, we ran into a wolf
searching for his midnight supper.
The Umiujaq region is remarkable, with impres-
sive geographic characteristics and, even more
impressive, lakes, rivers and hills that conceal a host
of natural treasures. The shore is comprised of end-
less, charming little crooks and crannieswithbeach-
es that snuggle against the foothills.
Puvirnituq
The plane takes us north, to Puvirnituq, a town
more important than Nunavik and located at the
river’s edge, in an area full of lakes and rivers in the
midst of tundra where trees no longer grow. The
town is bustling, with a hospital that receives
patients from far off places, a charming hotel, and
two supermarkets that drew the Inuit into the
streets on any pretext. Children play at the water’s
edge, bathing in the sunset; sled dogs wander on
