Portuguese IntellectualsandtheGlobalNavigation
They inaugurate the Global Navigation. Enrique
“The Navigator” (Oporto, 1394 - Vila do Infante, Por-
tugal, 1460), Portuguese prince, installed a research
center and nautical education that reunited Geogra-
phers, Astronomers, as well as the most outstand-
ing navigators and cartographers of the time. This
resulted in a series of fearless trips that culminated
in the reaching of the coastline of a new world for
Europe, and in opening new routes to the East.
With the arrival of Vasco da Gama to India and
the expansion of the Portuguese Empire in that
land, a lot of scientists were sent to the East to study
medicinal plants and elaborate new drugs. The
botanist Tom Pires and the doctors Garcia de Orta y
Cristvo da Costa compile and publish works on new
plants and local drugs.

In that living in a ship that navigates in soli-
tude the seas with their personal and collective
histories, carrying, along with their symbols and
those found from port to port, a world that has
overflown through the oceanic window to finally
reach its unity; to discover that the ocean itself
unites us all with other paradigms.
Intelectuales portugueses y la navegaciónmundial
Inauguran la navegación mundial. Enrique “El Nave-
gante” (Oporto, 1394 - Vilado Infante, Portugal, 1460),
príncipe portugués, instaló un centro de investiga-
ciones y enseñanza náuticas que reunió a geógrafos
y astrónomos, así como a los más destacados nave-
gantes y cartógrafos de la época, lo que se tornó en
una serie de viajes temerarios que terminaron por
llegar a la costa de unmundo nuevo para Europa, y en
hacer nuevas rutas al oriente.
Con la llegada de Vasco da Gama en India, y la ex-
pansión del imperio portugués en esa tierra, muchos
científicos fueron enviados hacia el Este para estu-
diar y elaborar nuevos fármacos y plantas medicina-
les. El botánico TomPires y losmédicos Garcia de Orta
y Cristvo da Costa recopilan y publican trabajos en
nuevas plantas ymedicinas locales.
