U
n día, en su intento por cazar un ciervo en medio
del bosque deBohemiaOccidental, el ReyCarlos IV
encontró unas fuentes de aguas termales que in-
mediatamente le hicieron olvidar su primer propósito. Sin
entrar en mucho detalle, digamos que este real descubri-
mientoderivóen la fundacióndeKarlovyVary (1349) , ciu-
dad también conocida como Karlsbad; en checo y alemán,
respectivamente, ambas voces significan “El Balneario de
Carlos”. El origen del nombre resulta claro, a partir de la
leyenda que narra cuando el Rey se lavó una herida de su
pierna y en un lapso notablemente corto sanó, lo que le
bastó para fundar esta hermosa ciudad balneario.

nce upon a time, while trying to hunt a
deer in the western Bohemian woods, King
Charles IV discovered these thermal wa-
ter springs that made him immediately forget his
prime purpose. Without much detail let’s say this
royal finding led to the foundation of Karlovy Vary
(1349), also known as Karlsbad -both in Czech and
German the namesmean the same: Charles’ Spa. The
origin of the name is obvious because of the legend
about the King. He washed a wound he had on his
leg, which healed in brief time. That was enough for
him to found this beautiful Spa City.
