Chiang Rai y Tented Camp
Aterrizamos en Chiang Rai, en medio de los arrozales
del norte rodeados por montañas, en el
Golden
Triangle
. La lujosa Land Roover nos esperaba. Después
de una hora de camino, el coche tomó un camino en
medio del bosque de bambúes y llegamos a una sun-
tuosa cabaña, a la orilla de un río, perfecto refugio
exótico. Era la recepción del Four Seasons Tented
Camp, una palapa con su bar, de madera y abierta a
los cuatro vientos.
En esa colina estaban esparcidas las habitacio-
nes, lujosas tiendas con todas las comodidades y una
fastuosa terraza con vista sobre el río. El restaurante
sorprendente, junto a la alberca, donde cada mañana
en el desayuno, una manada de seis elefantes bebé
aparecía para recibir plátanos.
Una mañana, nos entrenaron para ser mahout (o
Kao-Chang), hombre que dirige los elefantes. La
enseñanza consistió en utilizar palabras claves a las
cuales responde el paquidermo, como subir o bajar.
La clase incluía la zambullida en el agua, que sirvió
para refrescarlo y a nosotros también. Sensación
inexplicable resultó el sentir la piel del animal o
dirigirlo con palabras, presión del pie atrás de su
oreja. Acariciarlo, premiarlo. ¡Qué momento más
intenso y fabuloso!

Chiang Rai and Tented Camp
We landed inChiangRai inthemiddleof thenorthern
rice fields surrounded by mountains, in the Golden
Triangle that had a luxurious LandRoverwaitingus.
After an hour drive, the vehicle took a road
surrounded by bamboos until we arrived to a sanc-
tuary cabin on the side of a river, a perfect exotic
retreat. It was the reception of the Four Seasons
Tented Camp, a “palapa” with bar, made of wood and
completely open to the four winds.
In that hill the rooms were despaired. Luxurious
tents with all the commodities and a lavish terrace
that had a river view. The restaurant was amazing
next to the pool. Every morning while breakfast, a
small heard of six baby elephants appeared so we
could feed them bananas.
Onemorning, we were trained to be amahout (or
Kao-Chang), person that guides elephants. It was an
extraordinary experience. Wewere taught keywords
that the animals responded to, to go up and down,
how to maneuver and guide it. We got in the water
while on top of the elephant to refresh both them as
us. It was a stirring sensationwhen you touched the
skin or guided them with words, press the back of
their ears with our feet, caress it and reward it. What
a fabulous and intense moment!
