Durban es también la ciudad más cosmopolita de
todo el país. Una gran parte de la población es de ori-
gen hindú. A finales del siglo XIX los británicos trajeron
a muchos hindúes para trabajar en las plantaciones de
caña de azúcar. En 1893 Mahatma Gandhi llegó a
Durban también y fue en Sudáfrica donde comenzó su
campaña de resistencia pasiva que más tarde lo lleva-
rá a alcanzar la liberación de la India.
Una visita al distrito hindú de la ciudad es algo
que no debe dejar de hacer. El punto más atractivo es
el mercado de especies, donde se sentirá transporta-
do a la India con aromas y colores. La ciudad se
encuentra en la provincia de KwaZulu-Natal, hogar
del grupo tribal más grande de Sudáfrica, los Zulúes.
En el edificio del condado de la ciudad se encuen-
tra la Durban Art Gallery, con su colección de arte
sudafricano y el Museo de Ciencias Naturales. Las
actividades de entretenimiento se concentran en
Wilson’s Wharf, con sus innumerables restaurantes y
bares.
El puerto es la sede de innumerables regatas y
cuenta con una comunidad de clubes náuticos con
una tradición que se remonta a varios años.
The main attractions of this city are its beautiful
beaches and the aquatic activities that it offers.
Durban is also the most Cosmopolitan city of
all the country. A great part of the population is
Hindu. Towards the end of the XIX th century the
British brought many Hindus to work in the sugar
cane plantations. In 1893 Mahatma Gandhi arrived
to Durban and it was in South Africa where he
started his campaign of passive resistance which
later on will take him to reach India’s liberation.
A visit to the Hindu district of the city is some-
thing you should not miss. The most attractive
place is the spices market, where you will feel
transported to India with aromas and colors. The
city is in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, home of
the largest tribal group of South Africa, the Zulus.
In the building of the county of the city is the
Durban Art Gallery, with its South African art col-
lection and the Natural Science Museum. The
entertaining activities are concentrated in
Wilson’s Wharf, with its countless bars and restau-
rants.
The harbor is the venue of innumerable boat
races and counts with a community of nautical
clubs with a tradition that goes back several years.
