Así, terminamos comiendo platillos tradicionales en un motu
(pescado con coco cocido en un hoyo en la arena, guisado de
pollo, verduras) al ritmo de la música y con los pies en el
agua. Era una versión del paraíso.
Al regresar al Ti’a Moana zarpamos para rodear la bella is-
la de Taha’a, con sus profundas bahías de Apu o Haamene. Vi-
mos una iglesia de techo rojo a la orilla del mar, las montañas
accidentadas cubiertas de vegetación y de cultivos de vaini-
lla, playas donde se anclan los veleros, granjas perlíferas con
sus casitas sobre el agua. En el yate, Tavita Manea, el gran
maestro del tatuaje, nos enseñaba su arte y su cuerpo ente-
ramente tatuado como un verdadero libro.
Islas sagradas
La mañana nos sorprendió con una corta navegación dentro de
la laguna para alcanzar la isla de Raiatea, isla sagrada, con su
pico a 1017 m. Se considera que Raiatea fue la primera isla co-
lonizada donde se instaló la civilización y la última en someter-
se a la colonización francesa después de 10 años de guerra.
Entramos en la profunda bahía Faaroa, donde nos ancla-
mos. Luego, en kayak, entramos en el río, cuyas aguas bajan
del monte Toomaru. El paseo bajo la sombra de los árboles es
encantador, visitamos un pequeño jardín botánico de plantas
exóticas, con flores de formas y colores sorprendentes.
Al final de la mañana atracamos en la marina de Uturoa,
el pequeño pueblo que ofrece todos los servicios y tiene una
vida tranquila al pie del monte Tapioi que escalamos para ad-
mirar una fascinante vista de la isla verde rodeada por la la-
guna y el arrecife. Cenamos bajo las estrellas de Raiatea.

It was a version of paradise.
As soon as we returned to the Ti’a Moana we
sailed off and went around beautiful Taha’a Island,
with its deep Apu and Haamene bays. We saw a
church with a red roof at the edge of the water, the
mountains covered in vegetation and vanilla plants,
beaches where sailboats anchor and pearl farms with
their small houses over the water. In the yacht, Tavita
Manea, the great tattoo artist, showed us his art and
body, completely tattooed as if it were a book.
Sacred Islands
The morning surprised us with a short sail on the
lagoon to reach Raiatea, the sacred island, with its
1,017 m (3,336 ft) high peak. Raiatea is thought to be
the first colonized island, the place where civilization
was first established, and the last to submit to French
colonization after 10 years of war.
We penetrated the deep Faaroa bay and dropped
anchor. Later, in a kayak we entered the river, whose
waters descend from Mount Toomaru. The trip under
the shade of the trees is enchanting. We also visited a
small botanical garden of exotic plants of surprising
forms and colors. At the end of themorning we docked
at the Uturoa marina, a small town that offers every
service and leads a calmlife at the foot ofMount Tapioi,
which we climbed to admire the fascinating view of
this green island surrounded by a lagoon and reef. In
