Sus más importantes celebraciones son la Semana
Santa, en donde fe, tradición y folclor, van de la mano;
en esta época del año, los serpentenates empedrados
de las calles valencianas sirven de escenario para las
procesiones de las cofradías, las cuales se prepararon
durante todo un año para hacer única la representa-
ción de la Semana Grande; velas y flores decoran la
solemne festividad, mientras las bandas de música le
añaden un toque festivo pero respetuoso.
Moros y Cristianos, representación celebrada en
diferentes regiones y en distintas fechas, conmemora
la reconquista de las tierras ibéricas sobre los árabes.
En Alicante, por ejemplo se celebra el 6 de diciembre.
La Hoguera de San Juan es una de las fiestas
más esperadas, en la que se celebra la llegada del
verano. Con varios meses de anticipación se prepara
para que cada año se distinga como una de las fies-
tas más espectaculares del mundo; gracias a esto,
ha sido declarada de interés turístico internacional.
Los orígenes de esta tradición son inmemoriales, se
remontan a épocas cuando los pueblos paganos ha-
cían una pira en la víspera del solsticio de verano, de
ahí pasó a la tradición cristiana y en la década de
los veinte se agregaron figuras humanas que, año
con año, fueron creciendo hasta llegar a las actua-
les que generan inmensa admiración.

cessions of Brotherhoods, which are prepared all
year long for a one- time representation in the Holy

differentregionsandondifferentdates,commemorates
the Reconquista of the Iberian lands from the Arabs. In
Alicante, for example, it is celebratedonDecember6th.
Saint John’s Fire, one of the most expected
holidays, where the coming of Summer is celebrat-
ed, is prepared months in advance so each year it
distinguishes as one of the most spectacular cel-
ebrations; this has managed to have the holiday
declared of International Tourist Interest. The ori-
gins of this tradition go way back in time, to when
the pagan peoples would light a big fire on the
eve of the Summer Solstice, from there it jumped
to the Christian tradition and during the 20’s hu-
man figures were added that, year after year, kept
growing until they reached their actual sizes that
generate great admiration.
