Calatrava y la arquitectura
Santiago Calatrava (Valencia, 1951) es uno de los
artistas más relevantes de España. Arquitecto, inge-
niero, Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes 1999,
Premio Nacional de Arquitectura 2007.
Su trabajo más significativo es la Ciudad de las
Artes y las Ciencias, complejo arquitectónico, cultu-
ral y de entretenimiento en Valencia ubicado al final
del cauce del río Turia, transformado en jardín en los
años ochenta.
Este complejo fue diseñado por Calatrava y Félix
Candela e inaugurado en 1998. Es una obra de diseño
vanguardista integrada por diversos edificios. Por orden
de inauguración:
- L’Hemisfèric: cine IMAX y planetario, 1998, forma
de ojo, superficie aproximada 13 mil metros cuadrados.
- Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe: museo inte-
ractivo de ciencia, forma parecida a un esqueleto de
dinosaurio, 40 mil metros cuadrados distribuidos en
tres pisos.
- L’Umbracle: integrado por un jardín y un paseo
mirador, con especies autóctonas de la Comunidad
Valenciana, cubierto por arcos flotantes desde donde
se observa el complejo.
- L’Oceanogràfic: es el acuario más grande del
continente europeo, con ciento 10 metros cuadrados
y 42 millones de litros de agua, su cubierta con forma
de nenúfar es obra del arquitecto F. Candela.
- Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofía: edificio con tres
auditorios para ópera, música y danza, se inauguró en
el 2005.
- Ágora (actualmente en construcción): plaza
cubierta destinada a conciertos y actos deportivos,
por ejemplo el Gran Premio de Tenis de la Comunidad
Valenciana.
Calatrava and the architecture
Santiago Calatrava (Valencia, 1951) is one of the most
prominent artists of Spain. Architect and engineer,
awarded with the Prince of Asturias Award of the Arts
in 1999, National Architecture Award in 2007.
His most meaningful work is the City of the Arts
and the Sciences, architectural complex, cultural
and of entertainment in Valencia located at the end
of the channel of the Turia River, transformed in a
garden in the eighties.
This complex was designed by Calatrava and
Felix Candela and inaugurated in 1998. Is a master
piece of avant-garde design integrated by several
buildings. By inauguration order:
- L’Hemisfèric: IMAX movie theater and plane-
tarium, 1998, eye shaped, approximate surface thir-
teen thousand square meters.
- Museumof the Sciences Prince Phillip: interac-
tive museum of science, shape resembling a
dinosaur’s skeleton, forty thousand square meters
distributed in three floors.
- L’Umbracle: integrated by a garden and a walk
viewpoint, with autochthonous species of the
Valencian Community, covered by floating arches
fromwhere you canwatch the complex.
- L’Oceanogràfic: is the biggest aquarium of the
European continent, with one hundred and ten square
metersand42millionslitersofwater,itscoverwiththe
shape of a water lily is work of the architect F. Candela.
- Palace of the Arts Queen Sophia: building with
three halls for opera, music and dance, it was inau-
gurated in 2005.
- Ágora (actually in construction): covered square
bound for concerts and sport acts, for example the
Grand Tennis Prize of the Valencian Community.
