Nearly 1,200 flows pour their waters into the
Amazon River, which is fertile ground, with 7,200
km in length and between 2 and 30 km wide. Its
marshes are the richest, the abundance and va-
riety of fish it considerable, 1,500 species of fish
and is estimated that there are hundreds or thou-
sands that have not yet been discovered.
Sailing along one of the affluents of the Ama-
zon River, suddenly a dorsal fin with grayish pink
tones breaks the water surface, and I realize I am
seeing in the flesh a pink dolphin of the Ama-
zons, locally names botovermelho or botorojo
(U-Iara), with my eyes fixed on him I see that next
to me a grown dolphin with it’s baby is nearby,
coming out to breath some air followed by his
mother since he has little lungs. A smart creature,
respected, even feared; the boto rojo is amicable,
not only due to it’s color but for its skills. Many
legends of bad fishermen are locally told, once a
man treated wrongly a boto and bad things oc-
curred. To treat bad a boto means to search for un-
happiness and bad luck.

Amazonas, el cual es un terreno fértil; con 7,200 km de
longitud, y entre 2 y 30 km de ancho. Sus ciénagas son
las más ricas; la abundancia y la variedad de peces es
considerable. Hoy en este sitio ya se han descrito 1,500
especies de peces y se estima la existencia de cientos o
miles que aún no han sido descubiertas.
Navegando a lo largo de uno de los afluentes del
río Amazonas, repentinamente rompe la superficie del
agua una aleta dorsal grisácea con tonos rosados, yme
doy cuenta de que estoy viendo, en vivo y a todo co-
lor, un delfín rosado de Amazonas, llamado localmente
boto vermelho o boto rojo (U-iara), con los ojos fijos en
mi objetivo veo que junto a un adulto se encuentra su
cría, saliendo a respirar más seguido que su madre, ya
que tiene los pulmones pequeños. Creatura inteligente,
respetado e incluso temido, el boto rojo, agrada no solo
por su color si no por sus piruetas. El pescador no mo-
lesta al boto. Localmente se escuchan muchas leyen-
das de malos pescadores que agredieron algún boto y
surgieron consecuencias desastrosas. Maltratar al boto
significa, buscar infelicidad y mala suerte.
