breve caminata nos permitió observar la sencilla vida
de la gente de rasgos esquimales y la Gran Casa (
Big
House
) donde Francis nos explicaba la vida de la
aldea, la posibilidad de observar el
white spirit,
esos
osos negros que por una degeneración de los genes
tienen el pelo blanco. Es la única región donde se
pueden observar y son difíciles de encontrar.
Big House fue terminada en 2002 y tiene postes
magníficamente esculpidos y pintados que repre-
sentan el blasón de los kitasoo y xaixais, tribus
regionales. Grizzlis, osos negros, orcas, águilas y
ranas son representados en esos tótemes de mane-
ra estilizada y elegante. Águilas calvas nos observa-
ban mientras visitábamos la aldea, al pie de los
montes cubiertos de bosque húmedo, donde el mar
sufre sus mareas y parece un lago.
Siguiendo nuestra ruta, observamos leones
marinos antes de penetrar en Sheep Pasaje, donde
hay una hermosa cascada antes de terminar nuestro
día anclados en Windy Pass, un tranquilo refugio al
pie de los altos glaciares.
De Windy Pass a Kynoch Inlet
Una matinal caminata en el bosque nos llevó a cono-
cer los líquenes, hongos, musgos y las flores que cre-
cen en ese bosque húmedo, donde la nieve cae en
altura todo el año y poco al nivel del mar, y donde la
lluvia es abundante. Navegamos por Sheep Pasaje

elegant manner. Bald eagles watched us during our
visit to the village, hovering at the foot of mountains
covered with wet forests, where the ocean becomes
dizzy and looks like a lake.
Along our route we observed sea lions before final-
ly heading into Sheep Passage, where a beautiful
waterfall greeted us before we ended our day by
anchoring in Windy Pass, a tranquil refuge at the foot
of steep glaciers.
FromWindy Pass to Kynoch Inlet
A morning walk in the forest helped get us acquainted
with the likens, mushrooms, moss and flowers that all
grow in this forest, where snow falls abundantly in the
highlands all year round but rarely touches the ground
at sea level, which gets mostly rain. We sail along
Sheep Passage to observe beautiful cascades that fall
from the heights of giant coastal mountains, until
arriving at Mussel Inlet, where we anchor to walk along
