2,500 inhabitants, the town closed down in 1966. It
now seems like a ghost town, with crumbling
buildings that fall into the sea. Only one resident
remains, Lou, who tries tomaintain a semblance of
order, accompanied by his dog Bert and a few cats;
living in effect in the middle of a forest next to a
cascade that plunges into an incredible lake.
That day Lou had a guest, a young man who
came to visit in kayak from Seattle, camping along
the shore where bears are always a threat. At night,
we anchored in Bishop Bay, where we paddled
around in hot water from a spring in the middle of
the forest. A few plunged into the icy sea. The for-
est resounded with our laughter and voices, while
the mountains trembled.
hasta 2,500 habitantes, cerró en 1966, y ahora
parece un pueblo fantasma donde los edificios se
están derrumbando hacia el mar y donde sólo vive
Lou, el cuidador, con su perro, Bert, y algunos
gatos, en medio del bosque, al lado de la cascada
que baja de un soberbio lago.
Ese día, Lou tenía un invitado, un hombre
joven que venía en kayak, solo, desde Seattle,
acampando en la orilla donde los osos son siempre
una amenaza. Por la noche anclamos en Bishop
Bay, donde chapoteamos en agua muy caliente del
manantial, en medio del bosque, algunos también
se echaron al mar helado. El bosque vibraba
por nuestras risas y comentarios, las montañas se
estremecían.
