to protect the island from the evil spirits of the
souls and, according to legend, to allow the souls
to return to the island without getting lost.
On average, these monoliths measure
between 5 and 7 meters tall and the tallest is 21
meters tall, although it was never finished. Each
moai has different features and most of them
have a
pukao
, a stonehat placedon topof the figure
once it was carved.
300 moai, 250 ahu and various hare paenga
have been found, which can accommodate up to
100 people. The ahu are distributed along the
coast and Ahu Akivi is the only sacred place
inland where the moai face the sea.
We started on voyage towards the north
along the coast with small and high cliffs of
black stone, sharp, pounded by the waves, with
very little possibility of putting in. It is a very
inhospitable coast that offers an unusual and
sober landscape guarded by the moai.
We crossed several of these places full of
mysticism and we followed the coastline broken
by the Maunga Terevaka volcano until we arrived
at the small Bay of Bahía de Anakena, where we
were able to put into the white sandy beach
edged by coconut palms, where we camped. We
saw themoai that guard the ocean and we visited
the sites of Hanga Otfo. The feeling was one of
being in a place inhabited by the ghosts that sur-
round these figures that defied time.

enderezada.
Se han encontrado 300 moai, 250 ahu y
varias hare paenga que podían hospedar hasta
100 personas. Los ahu se disponen a lo largo de la
costa, y Ahu Akivi es el único lugar sagrado tierra
adentro donde los moai ven hacia el océano.
Empezamos nuestra navegación hacia el
norte, recorriendo una costa con cortos o altos
acantilados de piedra negra, filosa, azotada por
las olas, con muy pocas posibilidades de
acostar
.
Es una costa muy inhóspita que ofrece un paisaje
insólito y soberbio, con vigilantes moai.
Cruzamos por varios de esos lugares llenos de
misticismo y seguimos la costa escarpada del
volcán Maunga Terevaka hasta llegar a la pequeña
Bahía de Anakena, donde pudimos
acostar
en la
playa de arena blanca bordeada por palmas de
coco. Aquí acampamos. Vimos los moai que vigi-
lan el océano, visitamos los sitios de Hanga Otfo.
La sensación era la de estar en un lugar habitado
por fantasmas que rodeaban esas figuras que
desafían el tiempo.
Al día siguiente fuimos a conocer la hermosa
playa de Ovahe, los sitios de Te Pito Kura con sus
Viña del Mar es uno de los lugares
