años de la década de 1960. Colocaron señales
para refugios en caso de que se produzca otro. Es
un extraordinario puerto pesquero con una vida
vertida hacia el mar.
Siguiendo la costa admiramos hermosas pla-
yas bordeadas de pinares. Nos detuvimos en Isla
Negra para visitar la casa de Pablo Neruda, el gran
poeta que vivió muchos años en ese paraíso cos-
tero. Alcanzamos los encantadores pueblos de El
Tabo, El Quisco, Agarrobo.
Después de recorrer la costa más salvaje, bor-
deada por impresionantes acantilados, llegamos
a Valparaíso, el gran puerto comercial de Chile,
que nos recibe con su atmósfera europea y los
funiculares que alcanzan las colinas. Los bellos
edificios atestiguan la importancia y riqueza del
lugar y desde la colina la vista es espectacular.
Visitamos la elegante Viña del Mar, ciudad de
veraneo, donde su larga playa acoge la gente
ávida de sol y mar. Destacan sus fabulosos edifi-
cios, las grandes mansiones, restaurantes de alta
cocina y excelentes mariscos, el hotel Sheraton
Miramar y una divertida vida social que alcanza
su máximo desarrollo durante el verano.
Nuestro último recorrido nos llevó hacia el
norte, costa donde alternan zonas de mansiones,
pequeños puertos, largas playas y colinas que
bajan hacia el mar salpicado de islotes.
Concon se aloja en una verde colina, Quintero
y Punchuncavi dominan largas playas. Una gran
colina boscosa protege al pueblo de Zapallar, alo-
jado en una de las bahías más hermosas de la
costa. Las elegantes mansiones se esconden en
el bosque, y en medio de este soberbio escenario
bay. San Antonio suffered a tsunami that
destroyed a large part of the coastline in the
early 1960s. Signs were erected to indicate the
location of refuges in the event of another such
phenomenon. It is an extraordinary fishing port
where life is focused on the sea.
Following the coast, we admired beautiful
beaches surrounded by pine forests. We stopped
off at Isla Negra to visit the house of Pablo
Neruda, the great poet who lived for many years
in this coastal paradise. We reached the charming
towns of El Tabo, El Quisco and Agarrobo.
After sailing along the wildest coast, edge by
impressive cliffs, we arrived at Valparaíso, Chile’s
great commercial port, where we received by its
European atmosphere and funicular railways up
to the hills. The beautiful buildings bear witness
to the importance and the wealth of the city and
from the hill the view is spectacular.
We visited the elegant summer city of Viña
del Mar, with its long beach that spoils sun and
sea lovers. Among its highlights are its fabulous
buildings, large mansions,
haute cuisine
restau-
rants and excellent seafood, the Sheraton
Miramar Hotel and an enjoyable nightlife that
reaches its peak during the summer.
The last leg of our voyage took as north along
the coast dotted with mansions, small ports,
long beaches and hill is that seem to run into the
sea and dotted with islets.
Concon sits atop a green hill, while Quintero
and Punchuncavi have long beaches. A large wood-
ed hill protects the town of Zapallar, tucked into
one of the most beautiful bays on the coast. The
elegant mansions are hidden in the forest and in
