Lago di Lugano
Veníamos de Zúrich, y lo primero que encontramos
fue ese soberbio lago escondido entre altas monta-
ñas, animado por la ciudad suiza de Lugano, donde se
habla italiano y se vive a la italiana. Al fondo de una
gran bahía en la parte más ancha del lago, Lugano es la
elegante capital del cantón suizo de Ticino, situada en
ese llano donde el río Cassarate se vuelve lago, rodea-
do por montes de más de 900 metros de altura. Los
aristocráticos edificios adornan la orilla del lago con
sus marinas e impresionantes lanchas. Ahí vistamos
la Catedral de San Lorenzo, la iglesia de Santa Maria
degli Angioli que data del siglo XVI, y descubrimos el
fresco de la Pasión de Cristo de Bernardino Luini, la
iglesia de San Rocco, el Palazzo Civico en la Piazza De-
lla Riforma, el Cinema Corso, el Palazzo Riva y la Villa
Favorita. La Villa Heleneum es el típico ejemplar de las
mansiones a la orilla del lago y es el Museo delle Cultu-
re. Lugano es una ciudad refinada de lujo y ocio, donde
se vive un perpetuo aire de vacaciones alumbrado por
la luz del sur.
El lago, de origen glaciar, tiene una superficie de
48.7 km
2
, con 63% de su extensión en Suiza y 37% en
Italia y está dividido en dos partes por una presa na-
tural llamada de Melide formada por una morena gla-
ciar. Tiene una anchura de 1 km en promedio y ofrece
aguas serenas para los veleros, pues está protegido
por las montañas que no dejan entrar los vientos del
sur y sólo el aire, apenas, infla las velas.

We came from Zurich, and the first thing we found
was that magnificent lake nestled between high
mountains, animated by the Swiss city of Lugano,
where Italian is the language and Italian is the life.
At the bottomof a large bay on the widest part of the
lake, Lugano is the elegant capital of the Swiss can-
ton of Ticino, situated on the plain where the Cassa-
rate river becomes a lake surrounded by mountains
of over 900 meters high. The aristocratic buildings
adorn the banks of the lake with stunning sea and
boats. There we visited the Cathedral of San Loren-
zo, the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, dating
from the sixteenth century, and discover the fresco
of the Passion of Christ by Bernardino Luini, the
church of San Rocco, the Palazzo Civico in the Piazza
Della Riforma, the Cinema Corso, Palazzo Riva and
the Villa Favorita. The Villa Heleneum is a typical
example of the mansions on the shore of the lake
and is the Museo delle Culture. Lugano is a city of
refined luxury and leisure, where life is a perpetual
air of holiday lighting by the southern lights.
