1. Lago di Lugano.

Pasando Lugano, seguimos la costa norte adorna-
da por hermosas villas y cruzando la frontera, entra-
mos a Italia para descubrir los encantadores pueblos
de Oria, San Mamete, Cressogno y Porlezza, situados
en el golfo oriental del lago, que hacen vibrar esa her-
mosa ribera, con sus restaurantes y su música. Se
sentía el calor del sur; las pastas, pizzas y risotto se
anunciaban; el paisaje era hermoso. En Porlezza vi-
sitamos los restos de su muralla medieval, la iglesia
de San Vittore il Moro con su altar barroco, la iglesia
románica de San Michele del siglo XII, y en Cressog-
no descubrimos el santuario de Nuestra señora della
Caravina con sus frescos del siglo XVII. Subimos las la-
deras de las montañas para alcanzar el pueblo de Car-
dano donde se abrió ante nuestros ojos una soberbia
vista sobre el Lago di Como, con sus empinadas mon-
tañas que encierran el agua azul oscuro.
La carretera serpenteaba para bajar hacia el
lago, entre jardines y villas hermosas, hasta alcan-
zar Menaggio.
Lago di Como
Menaggio, el centro comercial más importante del Alto
Lario, fue nuestra puerta de entrada al Lago di Como,
el más bello de todos. Visitamos el pueblo donde las
terrazas de los cafés y de las heladerías se llenaban
de gente que tomaba el sol en ese luminoso otoño, los
callejones medievales nos llevaban a un paseo dentro
del pasado, y el pequeño puerto protegía las lanchas
para cuando hubiera mal tiempo. Visitamos la iglesia
de Santo Stefano cuya arquitectura barroca esconde
su origen románico, y la iglesia de San Carlos que data
del siglo XVII con su fabulosa pintura de Vermiglio.
Junto al lago descubrimos las elegantes villas porti-
cadas, el Gran Hotel y la villa Milyus-Vigoni de estilo
neoclásico.
Passing Lugano, follow the north coast adorned
by beautiful villas and crossing the border, we
entered Italy to discover the charming villages
of Oria, San Mamete, Cressogno and Porlezza, lo-
cated in the eastern gulf of the lake, which vibrate
that beautiful shore, with restaurants and their
music. We could feel the heat of the south, pasta,
pizza and risotto were announced, the scenery was
beautiful. In Porlezza a visit to the remains of its
medieval walls, the church of San Vittore il Moro
with its baroque altar, the Romanesque church of
San Michele of the twelfth century, and Cressogno
to discover the sanctuary of Our Lady della Cara-
vina with its frescoes of the seventeenth century.
We climbed the hillside to reach the town of Car-
dano which opened before us a superb view over
the Lago di Como, with its steep mountains that
enclose the dark blue water.
Thewinding road down to the lake, between gar-
dens and beautiful villas, all the way to Managgio.
Lago di Como
Menaggio, the most important commercial center
of Alto Lario, was our gateway to Lago di Como, the
most beautiful of all. We visited the town where
the terraces of the cafes and ice cream parlors
were filled with people basking in the bright au-
tumn, among medieval streets we took a walk into
the past, and the small harbor protected the boats
againts the bad weather . We visited the church of
Santo Stefano which its baroque architecture hides
its Romanesque origins, and the church of San Car-
los, dating from the seventeenth-century, with its
painting of Vermiglio. Lake side we discover the el-
egant porticoed villas, Grand Hotel and villa-Vigoni
Milyus neoclassical style.
