Expreso Malgache
Una forma de conocer Madagascar y disfrutar a pleni-
tud, desde los impresionantes paisajes de sus Tierras
Altas hasta la majestuosidad de sus costas, es realizan-
do un recorrido a bordo del Expreso Malgache, que des-
ciende desde Fianarantsoa hasta la costa de Manakara.
Esta locomotora que se encontraba un poco ol-
vidada, actualmente representa una de las mejores
opciones para entrar en contacto con la naturaleza y
la gente local. El tren es parte de la “herencia blanca”,
como le dicen los lugareños al legado que dejaron las
dinastías monárquicas, así como a la modernización
que se presentó en la isla durante el siglo XIX. El Ex-
preso nació originalmente como transporte de mer-
cancías y aunque ahora su actividad como transporte
turístico es la que permite que siga en funcionamien-
to, conserva parte del propósito con que fue conce-
bido, pues además de unir a una gran cantidad de
comunidades que de otra manera quedarían aisladas,
sirve para dotarlas de mercancías básicas para su sub-
sistencia y es el intermediario comercial entre ellas.

Malagasy Express
A way to see Madagascar and fully relish it, from
the astonishing landscapes of its High Lands to
the majesty of its coastline, is by taking a trip on
board of the Malagasy Express, descending from
Fianarantsoa up to the Manakara coast.
This locomotive, once a bit forgotten, currently
represents one of the best options to start contact-
ing the nature and local people. The train is part of
the “white heritage”, as the locals call the legacy left
by the monarchic dynasties, the same as the mod-
ernization occurring in the island during the XX
century. The express was born originally as a com-
modities transport, and even though its activity as
tourist transportation allows it to continue func-
tioning, it keeps part of the purpose from its con-
ception; for besides being a liaison for a great many
number of communities that otherwise would be
isolated, it supplies themwith basic goods for their
subsistence, and it is the commercial intermediary
among them.
