Una rápida y violenta

transición

Manila es producto de un sincretismo único: España,

México, China, Estados Unidos, Japón e incluso la cul-

tura musulmana, además de diversas comunidades

nativas. La ciudad como tal fue fundada en 1571 por

Miguel López de Legazpi y la fortificación de Intramu-

ros pronto tomó forma, hacia 1590, como el centro

político, social y defensivo de Manila.

Desde entonces, Filipinas, que estuvo goberna-

da por la corona española por más de dos siglos, fue

anexada a Estados Unidos hacia 1898 a través del

Tratado de París. Antes y después de ello, Manila ha

sido escenario de todo tipo de conflictos: ataques

piratas, rebeliones internas, catástrofes naturales y

destrucción desmedida durante la Segunda Guerra

Mundial. De hecho, Manila fue la ciudad más casti-

gada en esta guerra, solo equiparable a la devasta-

ción que sufrió Varsovia.

A rapid and violent

transition

Manila is the product of a unique syncretism: Spain,

Mexico, China, the United States, Japan, and Muslim

culture as well, not to mention various indigenous

communities. The city as such was founded in 1571

byMiguel Lopez de Legazpi, and the Intramuros fort

soon took shape, around the year 1590, as Manila’s

political, social, and defensive center.

Since then, the Philippines, which was gov-

erned by the Spanish crown for over two centu-

ries, was annexed by the Unites States in 1898

through the Treaty of Paris. Before and after this,

Manila has been a stage for all sorts of conflicts:

pirate attacks, internal rebellions, natural disas-

ters, and unbridled destruction during World War

II. In fact, Manila besotted on all sides during the

war, and the damaged it suffered can only be com-

parted to that of Warsaw.
