Intramuros:
la eterna perla de
Oriente
Antes de ser azotada por la Segunda Guerra Mundial,
Intramuros era globalmente conocida como la Perla
de Oriente. Hoy en día, no obstante su evidente de-
trimento, Intramuros continúa en pie, brindando un
descanso casi espiritual con sus ruinas antiguas y si-
lenciosas, alejadas del exceso de bullicio y estimula-
ción continua del resto de Manila.
Las murallas que podemos apreciar son sólo un
vestigio de lo colosal que fue. Algo que podemos
agradecer al destino, es que haya sobrevivido pre-
cisamente el Fuerte Santiago, así como la iglesia y
convento de San Agustín (Patrimonio de la Humani-
dad por la Unesco), donde podemos admirar su mu-
seo de arte sacro. En diciembre se lleva a cabo la Gran
Procesión Mariana, la más importante expresión de
devoción católica en la ciudad, así como toda una
fiesta de color y emociones.
Muchos trabajos de restauración y rehabilitación
se realizan en Intramuros. Manila tiene mucho de Es-
paña aún, existe una convivencia de ayuda mutua y
negociación entre ambas naciones e Intramuros es
una fortificación que evidencia y representa esta
unión en todo sentido.

Intramuros:
the eternal pearl of
the Orient
Before it was struck by tragedy in World War II, In-
tramuros was known around the world as the Pearl
of the Orient. Today, despite its obvious disrepair, it
still stands, and acts as an almost spiritual retreat
for those who can appreciate its silent and ancient
ruins, away from the excesses and stimulants of the
Manila city.
The walls that still support themselves pro-
vide but a glimpse of just what a colossal vestige
this edifice was. Luckily, the Fort of Santiago as
well as the church and convent of Saint Augus-
tine (a World Heritage Site) remains practically
intact. The museum must not be missed. In De-
cember, the Great Mariana Procession took place,
and it is the most important expression of catho-
lic devotion in the city, as well as a celebration
full of color and glee.
Intramuros has seen its fair share of renovation
works, as it is not only the duty of the city of Manila
to undertake this measures, but also that of Spain,
who provides assistance as required. This relation-
ship shows the bond that was created between the
two nations by Inframuros.
