Alexandria
This city, founded by the Greeks on the Nile Delta
and basking on the Mediterranean hardly con-
serves any of its past grandeur. The remains of
the
Pharos
, the lighthouse, were only discovered
by chance in the port. The resting place of its
founder, Alexander the Great, still remains a mys-
tery. The vestiges of its Hellenic past, as well as its
subsequent Roman occupation can be seen and
admired in the Greco-Roman Museum in the city.
Other interesting sights are the impressive
Roman Amphitheatre dating from the second
century A.D., only recently discovered and con-
taining marble seats accommodating 750 spec-
tators. Another landmark is Pompey’s Column,
erroneously attributed to this Roman hero by
crusaders but in fact erected in honor of Emperor
Diocletian in 295 A.D.
The Red Sea
With an area of almost 470,000 square kilome-
ters, its waters reach such countries as Egypt,
Sudan, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The
Northern part is divided by the Sinai Peninsula,
between the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba. The Suez
Canal connects the Red Sea with the
Alejandría
Esta ciudad, fundada por los griegos a orillas del
Mediterráneo en el delta del Nilo, apenas conserva
vestigios de su grandioso pasado. Los restos de su
mítico faro fueron descubiertos por casualidad en el
puerto y se desconoce el lugar del enterramiento de
Alejandro Magno, su gran impulsor. Casi todos los
vestigios de aquel pasado helénico y del posterior
dominio latino se pueden admirar en el Museo
Grecorromano de la ciudad.
Otras visitas interesantes son el elegante
Anfiteatro Romano, del siglo II, descubierto reciente-
mente y con asientos de mármol para 750 personas,
y la Columna de Pompeyo, un pilar de granito rosa de
27 metros de altura que los cruzados atribuyeron por
error a este emperador, aunque en realidad fue
levantada en honor de Diocleciano en el 295 d. de C.
Mar Rojo
Con una superficie de casi 470,000 kilómetros cuadra-
dos, sus aguas llegan hasta países como Egipto,
Sudán, Etiopía, Arabia Saudí y Yemen. El norte está
dividido por la Península del Sinaí, en los golfos de
Suez y Aqaba. El Canal de Suez conecta el Mar Rojo con
el Mediterráneo. Pero el Mar Rojo es conocido por sus
cristalinas aguas y sus hermosos arrecifes de coral, un
