The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica
Fue inaugurado el 25 de agosto de 1856, con la ópera
Ernani de Giuseppe Verdi; está catalogado como el ma-
yor referente de las artes escénicas del país, así como
su principal escenario. Es la casa de La Comedia Nacio-
nal y de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo. Entre
las personalidades artísticas que se han presentado
en sus salas están: Arthur Rubinstein, Andrés Segovia,
Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan, Vaslaw Nijinski, por solo
mencionar algunos; ya que continúa brindando una pro-
gramación artística de altísima calidad en sus dos salas.
Además, ofrece visitas guiadas; sala de conferencias;
sala de exposiciones; foto galería; centro de investiga-
ción y archivo; tienda de regalos; cafetería y restaurante.
La Catedral Basílica Metropolitana
Conocida como la Iglesia Matriz, está ubicada en la bella
Plaza Matriz que mantiene su carácter de plaza mayor
colonial. El 21 de octubre de 2017, cumplirá 214 años
de fundada, y fue elevada a la categoría de Catedral Me-
tropolitana por el Papa León XIII en 1897. La edificación
actual es la tercera sede de la iglesia, que está dedicada
a la Inmaculada Concepción y a los santos tutelares de
la ciudad: San Felipe y San Santiago.

since it was founded and since it was elevated in cate-
gory toMetropolitanCathedral byPopeLeoXIII in1897.
Thecurrent building is the thirdtohost thechurch, and
it is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the
tutelary saints of the city: St. PhilipandSt. James.
