a cultura Moche o Mochica se desarrolló en la cos-
ta norte de Perú entre 300 a.C. y 700 d.C. Alcanzó
un amplio conocimiento de la utilización del agua
que bajaba por los ríos de los Andes en una zona desérti-
ca, que les permitió abrir canales para irrigar sus tierras
y realizar unos excedentes agrícolas que permitieron un
importante desarrollo.
Se caracterizan por la utilización del cobre en la fabri-
cación de armas, herramientas y objetos ornamentales,
y también del oro para sus joyas. Fueron los mejores ce-
ramistas del Perú antiguo y se han encontrado una gran
cantidad y variedad de cerámicas que representan divini-
dades, hombres, animales, escenas ceremoniales, míticas
y eróticas. Estas lozas tienen un pulido impresionante que
se ha conservado a pesar de los siglos que han pasado y se
caracterizan por la asombrosa expresividad, la perfección

he most distinctive attraction here, though,
is the Señor de Sipán museum, which dis-
plays the findings of this important Moche
leader, in whose tomb are found elaborate jewelry
made out of gold and copper, necklaces made of
precious stones and shells and gold and turquoise
earrings. It is a fascinating museum found in the
city of Lambayeque, as it the Bruning Museum. We
also had the opportunity to observe the colonial-
era ruins of the city of Zaña, whichwas destroyed by
earthquakes and floods, and where the remains of
religious buildings still stand.
Following our designated course through the
edges of the arid desert, we passed along beaches,
circumscribe the cape of Bayovar to sail inside the
immense bay to reach the rocky and arid coast and
arrive at the gorgeous fishing town of Paita, found-
