e montañas en volcanes, de lagos en costas y
de selva en ríos, Guatemala nos recibe como
una tierra de aventuras y cultura, de depor-
tes y caminatas. Todo nos sorprende, las caras de la
gente son intrigantes y alumbradas por miradas lle-
nas de historias, la belleza de los tejidos alumbran
los mercados y el fuego de los volcanes calienta las
nubes que mojan la tierra. Es un país con un rico pa-
sado maya y que trata al visitante con cariño, ofre-
ciendo sus tesoros para disfrutarlos.
Veníamos navegando desde México por la costa
del Caribe, siguiendo la segunda más larga barrera
de coral del mundo, pasando por Belice y honduras
y alcanzamos Puerto Barrios donde descubrimos
sus animadas calles, su activo puerto a la orilla del
inmenso manglar. Las construcciones de madera re-
cuerdan la arquitectura colonial al estilo inglés, y el
ambiente tropical se anima con gente de todas las
razas. Recorrimos la carretera que nos llevaba hacia
el corazón del país, visitando las ruinas mayas de
Quiriguá que luce las más hermosas estelas que re-
presentan unos altos personajes y cuyos jeroglíficos
hablan de ese lugar que fue habitado desde el año
400 d.C., siendo enemigo de Copán.

rom mountains to volcanoes, from lakes to
coasts and from jungles to rivers, Guate-
mala received us as a land of adventure and
culture, of sports and hikes. Everything surprises
us, the faces of the people so intriguing and illumi-
nated by glances filled with history, the beauty of
various textiles gleaming from marketplaces, and
the fire of the volcanoes warms up the clouds that
moisten the earth. It is a country with a rich Mayan
history that treats visitors with kindness, offering
its treasures for them to be enjoyed.
Navigating fromthe Caribbean coast of Mexico, fol-
lowing the second largest corral reef in the world, we
passed Belize and Honduras until we reached Puerto
Barrios, where we found lively streets and active port
on the shores of the immense mangrove. The wooden
constructions remind one of the British colonial archi-
tecture, and the tropical environment is animated by
people of all races.We travelled throughahighway that
would lead us to the heart of the country, visiting the
Mayanruins inQuiriguá, whichboasts themost beauti-
ful of wakes that represent the nobility and whose hi-
eroglyphics speak of a place that has seen settlements
since the year 400 a.C., being an enemy of Copán.
