uando llegué a Tokio, se respiraba un aire de una
ciudadenmovimientocomosi losedificiosmis-
mos se movieran animados por la muchedum-
bre que invadía las calles, las tiendas, los trenes.
Todo sorprendía, la impresionante vista desde el
Mandarin Oriental, alojado en el piso 38 de la torre del
Ala; los melones en la tienda Mitsukoshi (a 100 dóla-
res la pieza); las panaderías; los restaurantes; las vi-
trinas con escaparates dignos de una galería de arte,
la gente que dormía en los trenes y el metro.
En la noche, la ciudad brillaba como una joya pla-
netaria. Los neones bailaban para desestabilizar los
pasos; los inmensos casinos retumbaban con el ruido
de las máquinas y ahogaban con espeso humo de ci-
garro; y sin embargo, las calles estaban impecables,
limpias, sin un papel o una colilla de cigarro. La gente
maravillosamente cortés, educada y alegre.
Tokio vanguardista
Tokio me conquistó a primera vista. Es una ciudad
que gana en ser conocida, visitando sus museos, sus
jardines, susmodernos edificios de diseño que desafí-
an al pasado; sus cafés, sus librerías.

Everything would amaze, the impressive view
fromtheMandarinOriental, found at the 38thfloor of

windows displaysfit for anart gallery, thepeople that
would sleep on the trains and on the subway.
At night, the city would shine like a planetary
jewel. The neon would dance to unbalance the
steps: the immense casinos would rumble with the
noise of the machines and would drown with thick
cigar smoke; and however, the streets were impec-
cable, clean, without a paper or a cigarette butt. The
people wonderfully polite, educated and cheerful.
Avant- Garde Tokyo
Tokyo had me at first site. It’s a city that wins
at being known, visiting its museums, its gardens,
its modern buildings with a design that defies the
past; its coffees, its libraries.
